Re: CD mixes that won't play on some players....

What is it that makes my CD mixes play on some CD players, but do not play on other players? There are several reasons that a burned CD might not play on a particular CD player. If you are burning a "music" CD, the best advice is to change your burning options to burn slower. CDR's burned...

So, is PCMCIA/ExpressCard a better way to get data to a device than USB or something? (I'm trying to figure out why Echo designed for those but not for USB.) PCMCIA was a standard interface for laptops before USB. It has generally fallen out of favor, and is losing to multi function media card read...

And what about winamp? I don't personally use it but a good number of DJs I know do use it.
MediaMonkey is a better player than winamp for casual listening at home or work.

IMO, neither is suitable for DJing...but both could probably be made to work in a pinch.

iTunes as a way to rip CD's to a computer can be good, but is most likely bad. By default, itunes will encode the songs in the "aac" format...which is not the same as an "mp3." There are way to have iTunes rip CDs to mp3's, but that has to be configured by you. Gotcha. I do know...

In general, this means using good quality sources for your music, higher bit rate mp3s (192kbps or higher seems to be preferred), and an external sound card. You lost me there. All my music comes from CDs. I have no idea what happens to it after I import the songs into iTunes (can you please direct...

Should I be worried about the sound quality? Yes and no. Yes: You should improve the things under your control until you reach the point of diminishing returns. In general, this means using good quality sources for your music, higher bit rate mp3s (192kbps or higher seems to be preferred), and an e...

So what I would like to know is the pros and cons of each one of those (jriver media center, mediamonkey, and foobar2000). Just the thought of trying them all until I find one that I like is overwhelming for me  The capabilities of those three programs will be similar. If you had specific req...

can anyone tell me about the different "versions" of media monkey? is it worth the money to shell out for better versions? The basic version of MM includes a mp3 compressor that will expire after 30 days. You can download and install LAME and just use that...but you have to do that. The b...

Now I use MediaMonkey for everything (except actually DJing). Ripping, converting, tagging, organizing, and listening at my desk. I know that's off topic but what do you use for DJing? I use BPM Studio. I do not recommend it. The upgrades and bug fixes have been "nearly done" for well ove...

For years, I used a bits and pieces solution, with dedicated tools for ripping & converting, and other tools for tagging, and still other tools for organizing, and even more tools for playing. Now I use MediaMonkey for everything (except actually DJing). Ripping, converting, tagging, organizing,...

I'll second that - my laptop is a business grade machine and it works great. Let me clarify...the difference between business grade and consumer grade is not in how well the laptop works - for the "same" processor/memory specs the two laptops will work the "same". The difference...

I'd avoid HP hardware. I've had too many friends encounter issues with HP PCs. Do not get too caught up in comments like this. There are really only a couple of tiers of laptop quality anyway (since all the guts are common to every laptop to begin with). There is a big difference in the quality and...

Would you say that your summary of processors is true even if someone says, "Eh, the laptop's probably over 4 years old..."? (I'm sure I'll get plenty of that considering what I'm putting into Craigslist.) (Take a look at this sweet baby ¡ ) The laptop you posted would get you most of the...

Re: Strategies for reducing treble harshness on 1930s tracks

I take it this spectrogram was run against the entire song? No. As pointed out following your post, Audacity will only profile about 20-ish seconds of a song. In the case of that graph, I selected about 16 beats of bass heavy material from a modern bass heavy pop song (the graph is labeled as such ...
