i dunno, i've heard that swing emphasized the upbeat, and i've also heard that swing smoothed out the beat. i mean, both have to occur to move away from hot jazz, but when i listen to old testament basie the pulse is pretty even from beat to beat. that might be because the drums are usually inaudibl...

umm. if you're providing the band with swing-era charts/arrangements, how are they going to veer off into progressive big band territory? big bands don't suddenly collectively improvise ... unless they're old testament basie. also i'm not sure you understood my point, but maybe i'm operating on inco...

It's interesting to me that music went from

ONE two ONE two (hot jazz)

to

one two three four (swing)

to

one TWO three FOUR (rock and roll)

i have no point here.

Cool device for creating a database of things you own. Scans the bar code/ISBN, automatically knows what the item is.

CD-R backup doesn't provide protection against fire or other disaster, though. Unless you store all your CD-R out of the house.

Insurance is always wise. Besides, who wants to lose all those liner notes? I would want those back if I lost all my shit.

That tool analogy doesn't work. CDs aren't tools, they're the raw materials. You can never have _too much_ raw material when building something.

Your collection is too big when you are trapped under a collapsed pile of CDs and your feeble cries for help draw no attention because the CDs reflect all sound back at you so that your echoing, dying words are the last thing you will ever hear in life.

verve jazz masters 49, anita o'day.

that album also has "johnny one note" which I LOVE ... although it's not really for dancing and is in fact rather kitschy in an incredibly frenetic and hummable way.

Anita O'Day has a version of "Boogie Blues" in 3/4.

It's kind of freaky to listen to since we're so used to the 4/4 version.
