Jazz Hour just added a lot of broadcast albums to the European branch of eMusic, and one of them is Ina Ray Hutton's "1943-1944 Spotlight Band Broadcasts".

I'll report back when I've listened to the 30 sec clips...

Re: Artie Shaw - Self Portrait

Artie Shaw - There's lots and lots of material, especially from the studio band, but to my taste only a few really good tracks for deejaying. I don't understand how this could possibly be the case. Just in 38 - 39 alone, you have one of the greatest bands in Swing history, but you can find "on...

Re: Artie Shaw - Self Portrait

[...] I always wondered why the 1938 radio transription CD I have is so awesome; come to find out the drummer is George Wettling, who is on the "Condon Mob" Mosaic CD collection, and who's music on that CD is fantastic. Late 1938 - 1939 Buddy Rich joins the band, and I find those tracks a...

There's a great Cozy Cole one out there as well... .. which is the same as the Ben Webster one... nevermind. The Stuff Smith version is decent as well, but the Bechet version is still the best IMO. The Bechet version from 1949 is the one that gets me going the most as well, being a little "hea...

...and that is why I at the moment have all my cd's ripped into lossless compressed files, with all metadata, as artist, album, year etc (and my own inserted bpm's and comments etc), which I have on my main hard drive, and then I have a backup of that on an external hard drive, now that hard drive ...

A collection of .wav files on disc in addition to the original CDs stored safely provides a backup of each there is bit rot on the disc, I have the copy on disc. Wingy seems to have done mostly vocals, some of which are fine, but it tends to become a little repetitive. Imagine, as a comparison, if Cab Calloway's orchestra had been able to do more tracks like "Queen Isabella", that is playing instrumentals without having Cab coming in and shunning ...

I read his autobiography which was very interesting . . . . and have a couple of his cd's. Also - he wrote (and recorded) Tar Paper Stomp which morphed into Hot and Anxious and In the Mood. With respect to data entry, as others have said, EAC will query freedb, I used to rip music with the creative media player for my own listening pleasure. I've found the two to be comperable for number of errors. Currently freedb populates it and I proofread and correct errors to match the CD case. ...

Because of the extremely low prices on hard drives I thought of going for uncompressed files when archiving my cd's, but after getting enough geek info about lossless compression, I chose that mainly beacuse of tagging. With .wav I have simply not found any way of storing artist, album, bpm, recordi...

Yep, very good clip indeed. Nice rhythmical singing.

I wonder if there are any good cd's with her stuff. It's possible to get "Ina Ray Hutton and Her Melodears" [Vintage #81] with Truckin' on it from Worlds Records.

Does anyone have it, is it good?

The phono level inputs likely have a pre-amp with a particular frequency response tuned to phonograph players so you definitely don't want to plug a laptop or other line level source directly in to a phono input. If you're good with a soldering iron and electronics, you could try this home-brew sol...

Re: Favorite Version of "Bugle Call Rag"?

While the live Goodman version from "On the Air 1937-1938" used to be my favorite until I heard the Metronome All Stars version. That version is sooooo tight. Especially the trumpet hits on the out chorus - so clean and tight and driving. [...] I love to rip up the floor to the 1941 Metro...
