See, Rayned, I told you so! Rayne: should we make the essential albums a swingdj thread? Shana: it would be interesting Shana: but I'm not touching it with a 10 ft pole Rayned: no? Shana: not until I see that it's not going to be a ripfest Shana: oh! I know! We should ask the board to come to a cons...

Danceable Swing Basoon?
Illinois Jacquet does a bassoon number on the Black and Blue album. It's nominally danceable, but I'm interested in finding some more danceable bassoon stuff for a basoon playing dancer friend of mine. Anything interesting out there?

I have a bunch of vintage sheet music and memorabilia that decorates my living room. My favorites are the 'Lucky Lindy' sheet music, 'Ballin the Jack' sheet music, the gorgeous 'Darktown Strutter's Ball' sheet music with 5 black couples dancing on the cover, the Saturday Evening Post cover with a bl...

Our scene has been growing steadily. Dancers have been moving here in droves, and we've reached the critical mass of teachers that allows beginner dancers to get good quickly. We've also got enough good DJs that the music always stays interesting. I think a lot of scenes have trouble because some DJ...

Since most people get into DJing because they liked the music and happened to amass an enormous collection of music, that leaves out most of the women I know. For whatever reason, I know fewer women that are into jazz than men. So it's not all that surprising that there are fewer female DJs. It also...

What I don't understand is that there's little stigma attached to getting paid to teach, assuming it's more than a 30 minute East Coast Swing intro class. Teachers are providing a service that a limited number of people can do, and get paid to do so. Most DJs have worked for years compiling a music ...

I run a swing venue, so I almost always get paid to DJ. If I'm a guest DJ at an event that is not for profit, I won't take money for it. But if it's a venue that is for profit, I appreciate something for my trouble, and I always pay guest DJs and instructors for their time at my venue. It puzzles me...
