Absolutely, this is a massive topic on its own. I think it would vary a lot depending on each scene. From my own perspective, we went from playing a wide range of "swing" music including many novelty songs, to a focus on classic swing in the mid-2000s. Now we are branching out again, but ...

Thank you for the information!

The evolution from CD to laptop based DJ-ing is quite obvious to me.

Has anyone noticed any general trends on the type of material being played by the Swing DJs over the years? In particular, I would be more interested in the perspective of DJs who focus mostly on 'classic' material.

Well, there is still a lot of music that you can only acquire via CDs.

Mark Tortorici DJs during the breaks of his weekly Dance at Joe's, on Tuesdays, in the Los Angeles area with a mix of 78s, 45s and CDs.

I think the key question is: why? It's a lot of work, and there are a lot of solutions out there already. What do you feel they are lacking? Start there, perhaps. What Alex said. Perhaps, a new Swing DJ system should have some smart filters to prevent some DJs to play certain songs, because too lam...

You presumably have been hired by the groom and/or the bride, who are going to be too busy pay pay attention to your set. Thus you should give it a ironic twist with songs such as: :) Am I blue After You've Gone Baby, Won't You Please Come Home? Dinah It Makes No Difference Now Somebody Stole my Gal...

Maybe I'm missing something, but it sounds exactly like the 1941 version to me. Maybe it's just a mislabeled track.

So Wingy Manone recorded two early versions of Ochichornya, one in 1938 and one in 1941? Or it is just only one version that was recorded in 1938 and then published in 1941? I looked them up on YouTube and from a quick listen of the first 50 seconds, both the 1938 and the 1941 version posted there s...

How do you manage to get your SoundCloud playlists into one single file each? Is that Sound Cloud option? Or you first convert your song mix into a single long .wav file, compress it and then upload it?

Thank you,

Very nice set, Sam. :) I managed to listen only some of it, but I've discovered at least a couple of new good tunes.

Also, some belated kudos to Anton.

Check out the tunes of the Casey MacGill Blue 4 Trio (on Amazon and CD Baby). This is a contemporary vintage band from Seattle.

In the U.S. the eMusic and Amazon mp3 catalogs are quite similar. Hence, I often use the Amazon mp3 search engine and then check if eMusic has the albums I find with those queries. It usually works. Overall, I'm happy with eMusic, despite some shortcomings. To me, it is a great tool for expanding th...

Rag Mop is indeed great. It's on my list of close-to-overplayed tracks. Bob (and Bing) Crosby definitely recorded a significant number of songs originally by Western Swing and Country artists, more than any other Jazz artists I know: Rag Mop (originally recorded by Johnny Lee Wills), It Makes No Di...
