Re: Battle of the DJs - HJDF/Swing City

Hi all, I haven't seen a post about this anywhere else, so I thought I would mention the Battle of the DJs contest at the Harlem Jazz Dance Festival. Who's going? What do you expect it to be like? And the most important question: how can I win? http://www.aivjd.org/hjdf/events.html I heard ...

What if, instead of asking people dancing 8-count-Lindy Hop-derived patterns to Barbara Morrison to change the name of their dance to "New Testament Lindy" or "Wiggly Hop," we asked people dancing 8-count-Charleston-derived patterns to Chick Webb to start calling their dance &qu...

Part of the reason is that just recently there has appeared a very non-threatening venue to practice at --- we have an informal dance on Monday's here which is run by one of the local swing clubs. There had been one guy DJ'ing for too long, so we decided to open up the DJ'ing to volunteers -- two p...

re "only a few that I know of"....... In Houston, we have a strong core of female DJs who are very active locally (about 1/2 are female). The main difference I have noticed between the sexes here is that our guys are posting online more often and have pursued DJ slots at national events. ...

There's a hardware/software combo out there that's basically a usb phono amp called Steinberg Clean Plus.

Maybe the software can even deal with the different eq curve required for 78's.

bn.com has samples for the whole centennial ellingtonian avalance Wow - maybe I take that back, bn.com had samples this weekend, now they don't even list it for sale. --edit: I did my comparison, and the centennial remasters totally win. I'll take those pretty highs that they seemed to get outta no...

Compressor on 78 era stuff...?

Anyone messed much with compression on early recordings? I've been playing with it in software, but the combination of my not really understanding the settings, and the HUGE difference between home speakers / headphones and PA systems in big halls is keeping me from coming to any conclusions on how ...

Yeah, I guess way off topic...but you know, this is at least a more neutral site than yehoodi or jj. Good points. We have that distinguising problem in eugene, the local westies called their club just the "Eugene Swing Club" and always advertised their stuff as just "Swing" .. an...

Wow, it's like that song from the bar scene in the first Star Wars movie!!! I don't get it. It's similar in that it has neither a shuffle rhythm or a walking bass line. :) (actually, having been there, I feel the lindy in it, early lindy, but lindy.. I wonder if, hearing only the mp3, I would have ...

When are you guys going to stop with the "its not Lindy hop" stuff? I can do 3 swingouts and a circle to Barbara Morrison just fine, thank you. How come you persist with such silly statements? Do you really think by telling people they aren't doing Lindy hop that somehow you are going to ...

"Blues dancing" is too ambiguous: implying that dancing to Stevie Ray Vaughn, up-tempo Jimmy Witherspoon, or even Count Basie is not "Blues Dancing." It also helped that there were a little more specific names in the film (dunno if they were invented by Mura or came from the dan...

What about ... sometimes have you noticed some players not being happy about the last track or two on a pretty full CD? That might have something to do with how it was burnt (and perhaps the burner's problem with the speed)? Or is it probably the CD-player (or some combination of both) just not hap...
