ok, how many DJs actually see THEMSEVLES as being in a camp/group? cuz I don't - I may emphasize one more than another depending on the situation, but I play both ends of the spectrum and lots in between.. and thankfully, I hear a lot of DJs who do the same. -edit: Is it really *that hard* to like b...

Honesly though it seems like we are playing six degrees of Kevin Beacon just so peopel can justify playing Basie in this arm chair version of HJDF DJ Battle. The Oracle says: Count Basie has a Bacon number of 3. Count Basie was in Sex and the Single Girl (1964) with Tony Curtis Tony Curtis was in H...

did you know that Guy Lombardo set the Savoy's attendance record?

So, come on, who's gone bust some Royal Canadian shit?

Toss Fats Waller & Cab Calloway on the list for a strong connection to Harlem, they had solid musicians, even if a lot of their stuff leaned towards novelty.

There's a Bechet song called "Characteristic Blues" that does it, with commentary "You done woke up too much now! slow that thing down.. that's right, now ya got me in the mood.".. I think the only time I ever played it was actually at a house party with dancing, cuz I wanted to ...

I also think the audience members at HJDF will be a whole lot more educated than your typical "Dance Contest Night" at the local bowling alley. One would hope.. The only other contest like this I've heard of was one in seattle, where the winner was a guy who's been playing the same mix lo...

Has anyone ever noticed who wins in audience judged dance contests?

Children, old people, and idiots in red suspenders doing off time airsteps.

I congratualte you all on competing to be the DJ equivalent.

Also, although not all hi-fi is good, many of the bad hi-fi recordings are bad because hi-fi reveals defects in the musicianship that lo-fi concealed. In the genre of stuff that was recorded just for the sake of having a hi-fi take on an earlier recording, it's usually just that it's lifeless that'...

Re: Nightmare gig for a new DJ

I guess one solution is to bring your own sound system. A really good solution. I definitely see the benefit of laptop djing from this perspective.. you can have your music, cd players, mixer and even sound processing all in one lil box - and venue owners won't get their feelings hurt because you d...

You can get cheaper ones elsewhere now - Gemini's dirt cheap model is 40 bucks.

Somehow, I feel like less of a geek because somebody posted the same thing before me..

I've looked through bins of 78's a few times, but I've never seen anything even halfway decent..

I did pick up a nice sounding Isham Jones reissue on vinyl yesterday, and some blues oriented Budd Johnson..

..and, you could probably make a little box, use some velcro creatively, and get it set up so you can carry it around as a single unit that just needs to be plugged into the wall and the inputs on whatever you're plugging it into..

anybody have recommendations on cheap portables with a line-out?

In terms of people not touching original era music, I was actually counting at the austin exchange before last, and I think the total on pre-'45 tunes played all weekend was about 6, and 3 of them were a mixed CD that got put on before a band played.. (Matt Jones played 'em for the comps, but we did...

just as Lindy Hoppers took on a new name when they moved away from Charleston. It strikes me that the naming was a little more arbitrary than that.. and that the dance that was being done in '27 (not that I've seen a clip from '27, but '29 at least) under the name Lindy Hop only shares so much with...
