Dennis Rowland

Any other decent danceable Dennis Rowland songs out there besides "Wild Women Don't Have the Blues" (138 BPM), which is a pretty fun lindy song, in my opinion, if you like groovy vocals. All the other clips I have listened to sound pretty lame.

Yeah, but we're talking about the definition of "swing". A swing rhythm has swinging eighth notes. The swing rhythm might be carried in the cymbals, but it might not. It can be carried by any of the instruments. Just as a single piano can have a swing rhythm, so could just a voice. It has ...

I don't play much of it at all. Can't tell you why, I just haven't dug the songs with violin.

You don't play Slim Gaillard or Cats and the Fiddle? Or Benny Goodman small groups?

I chose the answer about swinging rhythm, 4 beats to measure, and emphasis on 2 and 4. Do the following "swing"? 1. Andrews Sisters' "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" or "Bounce Me Brother..."? 2. Jimmy Witherspoon's "There's Good Rockin Tonight"? 3. Big Bad Voodoo Da...

What is "swinging music"?

Let me see if I can try to make a decent poll question about this topic.

This is hard.

I note that Jesse artfully entitled this general forum topic "swinging music" just to be inclusive as possible, to avoid this debate.

I don't look upon most requests as insulting. I think the "can you play something slower/faster?" requests are kinda insulting, but when people specifically request a particular song, I'm all right with it, most of the time. I've had people come up to me with requests who I know love my dj...

Not this again. The only way "swings" has any real meaning is if it describes a song with swinging eights. A song either has them or it doesn't and its not opinion. Unfortunately, plenty of people, including musicians, use it to mean "I like it!", "makes me want to move!&quo...

MMR is about as classic as you can get. The anti-groove. In fact, if MMR and BM played music in the same room at the same time, would the result be something like a matter/anti-matter explosion?

Mora's Modern Rhythmists versus Barbara Morrison

I did a few of these polls on the Yahoo list and I thought they were kinda fun.

How about these two bands. Which do you play more and why?

They are pretty different so I imagine most people will have a clear preference...

I like to go walkabout to check the volume at the back of the room when I DJ, but its still easy to mess it up on the other songs. That's a good thing about having other DJs in the room, I appreciate it when another DJ tells me that the volume needs to be turned up. And I do the same thing when I'm ...
