I seem to recall that Whitey's practiced there using records. I can't imagine that a band played for all their practices, but ... wilder things have happened.

My favorite version (again, I come from a listening standpoint and not a 'for dancers' standpoint) is the Goodman Live at Carnegie Hall version because of the story behind it. I'm sure you've heard it all before so I'll repeat it again because I like hearing myself talk! As the liner notes say, the ...

Went to Amoeba recently and saw lots of these Quadromania sets. I picked up a Pee Wee Russell (some of which I have from an Eddie Condon box set already, but whatever) which is nice. There are no liner notes beyond recording date and personnel. The little prongs that hold the CD in the 4-cd case all...

For those fans of MBRB a new release on ASV. Will be interesting to see what the remastering is like. I have ordered my copy :) http://www.worldsrecords.com/pages/artists/m/mills_blue_rhythm_band_the/the_mills_blue_rhythm_band_59831.html I just bought this a few days ago. It is excellent, but since...

Live music was the norm for nightly entertainment in the early to mid twentieth century, even when movies and radio came along. There were literally thousands of musicians in major cities playing hundreds of venues, and not just jazz. In the early part of the century it was de rigeur to have a piano...

I heard this Andy Bey track on KJAZZ -- It's Only A Paper Moon. He's got an amazing baritone. The song is very "groovy" and bluesy for lack of better descriptive phrases. Normally I think the song is extremely corny, but he makes it drip with passion. The album is full of very slow songs, ...

That clip was removed, but I found another of a live performance on Ellen. One comment amused me:
Hehe... Pretty neat tune actually. Could have easilly been an Ellington tune from the 40's
the pain.

Not that I'm trying to 'razz' you, but: http://www.swingdjs.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=48 Anonymity has its uses, but in reality most of us are pretty inoffensive. As a friend of mine once described it, swingdjs.com is like a bunch of teenage girls in pajamas playing records for each other on the be...

When I DJed at Lindy Gras, the only request I got was from a newer for some Indigo Swing. Boy, was he excited to see that I had BOTH of the albums on my laptop. I think most dancers were just happy that I was playing shorter songs, the band songs were generally all on the long side. You know, I rem...

"Is this the only music you guys dance to? Jazz?" "No, we dance to this too." [Bon Jovi - One Wild Night] I don't think I've ever seen him smile that big. Right away he wanted to know when the next lesson was. Can you send me the names of some of these songs? I have no objection...

A google search on "Argentine tango music" immediately turns up this very informative-looking site: http://www.tejastango.com/tango_music_collection.html In addition to those you've mentioned, Pugliese and Firpo are pretty good (in my very limited knowledge of tango music). Oh yeah, I forg...

I think your being a bit paranoid... there is an abundance of high energy swing music out there. But for me, personally (let me emphasize personal preference), few swing songs compare to the raw energy of, say Bon Jovi or Outkast... both groups have a nack for high energy at a lower tempo. High tem...
