At no point did I say the Titan Hot Seven sucked. I said they weren't the greatest thing ever. Two of the members are really great, the rest are not at their level. That doesn't mean "please tell me about my band". I didn't ask for a personal attack. A couple of people just decided to pick...

I wasn't asking for criticism. I was asking why I don't hear more Swing music - hell I wasn't even talking about live music. Then a couple of people started attacking me and my band. It's just petty and low. Fuck this.

Wow, I was wodnering why I went to Swing events, I got Dixieland or Hot Jazz, and very little if any swing music. I'm sorry if you though I was lumping things together, but since I don't go to lindygroove, I feel like everything lately has been very trad-centric. I wasn't asking anybody "why do...

I think part of the reason is that, in terms of live music available today, most swing bands play jazz reflective of post-WWII musical elements mixed in with lots of rat pack type crooner music. There are very few bands that play the way that you or say, Mora's Modern Rhythmists play. Those modern ...

I have to say I'm a bit mystified by everybody going gaga over the Titan Hot Seven. They play loud and fast - is that all anybody cares about anymore? Bob's great, Jeff's great, but honestly rest of the band is just getting by. I guess they do roll around on their backs when playing - guess I've jus...

TIM / Past Perfect

Where can I order some of the Box Sets by TIM / Past Perfect. The Duke "Portrait" one is just great, and I would like to see who else they put out.

I've seen a lot of problems with powered mixers. I'm a big fan of powered speakers - like JBL Eons. They're relatively cheap, they're modular, and you can chain them together. You can use them as speakers, monitors, whatever. Or you can use just one if you need something less. If all you need to do ...

A good artist can still record crap. Just because it's Ella doesn't make it good.

Duke recorded "I'm Checkin' Out" twice in 1939, but it wouldn't surprise me to hear that it was an instrumenal first. After all, "Never No Lament" was the original instrumental version of "Don't Get Around Much Anymore." As I said, songs that weren't written with words,...

Vocalese isn't the same thing. I'm a firm believer that songs that weren't written with words, generally shouldn't habe words.

Song quotes / solo quotes as songs.

Here's something I noticed recently. Sweets Edison's solo in "Avenue C" (Basie, 1945), ends up being the melody to "Sweets" (Basie, 1950). Coleman Hawkins solo in "One O'Clock Jump" (Metronome All Star Band, 1941), ends up the melody to "Feedin' the Bean" (Bas...

Nobody answered the actual question! Which Decca set is better? They both have exactly the same songs. They will both have complete personnel listings / session dates, etc. I don't need another Basie bio in liner note form. I suppose the real question is which one has better sound quality? Yakov - w...
