Dave nailed it. Nathan, I think you're missing Stan's point. Backups are about protecting digital assets, in our case, our music collection and the effort required to collect and digitize it for DJ purposes. In general, the backup is something you should have but should hopefully never need to use. ...

I bought an external hard drive last year exclusively to keep a backup of my music. That robocopy tool looks useful though; I'll have to give it a try. Thus far I've just been recopying my entire library every month or so. Recopying your entire music collection is not a bad plan, it's just way more...

Music: The race to be the loudest

Here is an excellent article on the loudness trend in music mastering. http://spectrum.ieee.org/aug07/5429 The first page of the article shows a representative waveform from 20 years ago, and one from today. In editing music for couples over the years, I have seen this first hand. In the 1980's (and...

I use Acrinos True Image (Norton Ghost is similar), to create an "image backup" of all my system. After I do a fresh OS installation, and update the service pack to the latest, and get all the software installed, and load all the drivers, and then setup printers, wireless, etc, etc, etc, e...

That said, why are you sticking with XP for now? I am sticking with XP because it's working. For my DJ systems, I want stability, and I want reliability. I have no present (or near term) need to upgrade hardware. Obviously if a system fails I would need a replacement - but I would also immediately ...

Yes, back-up would have been a good thing. I also edit tags a lot on the fly while DJing (ratings, genre, BPM, etc.) and backing them up regularly would save the edited tags, as well. I use robocopy (search on microsoft.com) to handle things like that. I edit tags whenever I see something wrong. I ...

Got Backup?

Over the weekend, I was doing some maintenance of my music collection on an external hard drive. The power cord got wrapped around the chair base, and the hard drive was unplugged in the middle of a big copy operation. When I plugged everything back in, nothing on the drive was readable!!! I...

The burden of figuring these things out is just unacceptable. First, let me say that I have no first hand experience with Vista as I will be sticking with XP for the foreseeable future. The burden of understanding new technology and how to use it to accomplish tasks that are of interest to you will...

Good points, but 1) even if you can do it, the fact that you can "deauthorize" a computer is not well-known; at least I didn't know about it until you mentioned it, and I still don't know if you can do it after you dispose of the previous computer (You might be stuck if you neglect to do ...

For similar reasons, I refuse to buy anything from ITunes because the 5-computer limit on many of the ITunes proprietary files will make them obsolete and unplayable in a few years after I upgrade computers a few times. Computers can be de-authorized in iTunes, and will no longer count against the ...

Actually, the "Austin policies" were promulgated as "guidelines" (not even policies), but in subsequent years suddenly became treated as "rules," exactly as I had suspected they would be. This is a lot of discussion about a set of guidelines/policies/rules/pointers/tip...

Like anything, there is a certain point at which you learn enough to be dangerous but not quite enough to realize how much more you still need to learn. Enumerating some of the requisite knowledge as we are attempting to do in this discussion is a worthwhile step to help new DJs become great DJs. +...

To me, it seems that the DJ is very much more connected with the music when using records as opposed to any other medium. There is less between you and the music. Technically - no, I dont want to haul records around. I have nothing, at heart, against technological upgrades, but I feel a loss of con...
