- You'll want at least a gig of ram. - I prefer to stick to internal, but that's because I hate having to carry an extra hd around and like to keep my workspace clean. - Consider spending a few bucks on a mini surge protector ( example ). You never know when you'll need the extra plugs, especially ...

There is a free version for non-commercial and evaluation use. You should download and play with it for a while (2weeks?) to really decide if that's what you want to use. Also, read the manual.

Thanks for the full reply! So if I pick CuePhase as my software of choice (I like what Jonas has to say about it!) CuePhase appears to be available only for the Mac. So, your plan to get Win XP might need some rethinking... This is exactly why it is important to pick your DJ software first.....

I'm also looking for recommendations : in the market for a laptop, $650-$850, for DJ-ing primarily. What are the priorities when I am looking at a machine's spec? Sound card? And if so, what about it? What should I be looking for in the sound card's spec? Right now, I'm thinking : Win XP, at least ...

I figured that if I was going to make the shift, I might as well go whole-hog, re-think the whole enterprise outside the box of my old CD-DJing habits, and discard all the inefficiencies of CD DJing, even if they had become comfortable habits. I have been giving this a lot of thought...but I have r...

Thanks for the tips Stan. I am also thinking of getting a hardware controller to use with the software, which apparently gives you a console to control your software (I hate the idea of being tied to a laptop screen and mouse). I've looked at hardware controllers, but (so far) I have not been willi...

I've decided it's time to go digital. That means choosing the right DJ software. My priorities are: 1. Stability 2. Ease of searching for songs while one is playing 3. Ease of previewing a song while one is playing I've had a look around the internet, and a provisional shortlist is: <snip/> Any com...

I have been down this road many times...here is an exchange from several years ago about the subject of tipping the local DJ. >FYI, there is not a single west coast swing DJ I know who could come >even close to making a living based on what they are paid to play for >dancers. If there is anyone out ...

If you have volunteer DJs, I assume also have other volunteers teaching lessons, cleaning up at the end of the night, promoting the event, etc. who are probably just as deserving of a gratuity. The clean up crew spent $10,000 of mops, and brooms that they needed to clean up? The free lesson was tau...

Actually, I think smart playlists sort of blow, compared to what they could be. For instance, I know of no way to include OR or NOT connectors in smart playlists. Granted. I'd go even further - I'd like to be able to write my queries in SQL...just because I already use that in my "day job.&quo...

Changed my mind on this; I now search within smartlists and enjoy the automatic updating. The automatic updates is the killer feature of smartlists. This is one feature that I wish was included in any software that can do a search. I have some smartlists that are setup to search by dance and by rat...

If I was a pro DJ, I'd probably start on the laptop front with a ruggedized device , these are built to take more in-transit abuse than a typical home or business laptop Panasonic is the only manufacturer making a laptop that could really claim to be "ruggedized" - the Toughbook series. E...
