I guess I'll reiterate my original point: WHO CARES? It's going to be impossible to have an exact definition that everyone agrees on. If I had to define it, I would say that groove is slower, modern, bass-laden swinging music that lindy hoppers can dance to. But, again, who cares? Why don't we discu...

I've always DJ'd by ear, but now that I'm trying to do it on a laptop, I'll have the ability to check the BPM quickly. I think it will change my DJing for the better. I've gotten stuck in a little rut of playing the same songs off of the same CDs, because I don't want to risk trying to find a new so...

Unfortunately some local politics have come into play..so I'm not quite sure how often I will dj locally. See... that's just what I was afraid of. I'm afraid of Lindy DJing becomming so political that women need to be some sort of Hillary-Clinton-like sycophant in order to break through the glass c...

Give me a break. We all know what we're talking about here. The "what's the definition" argument is old hat. Who cares if X song or Y artist fits your defintion of what should or shouldn't be classified as "groove?" Who cares if everyone can't agree on the exact defintion of &quo...

there's no meaning behind it other than to exclude people that don't match up. kalman I'll just assume you're joking, because that's a pretty silly statement. Despite how dumb it may be to use the word "groove," or however much some people might not like it, it's the word that currently d...

What the hell are you talking about? Of course you can like dancing to both. Some people like vareity you know. Um, yeah. I know plenty of people who like both, me included. :? You seem to be quoting me out of context and completely misinterpreting what I wrote. I didn't say it was impossible or ba...

So something that ought to be addressed is the following question: was the "groove" trend started by DJs, or did the DJs just adjust to the changing tastes of dancers? Which came first, the "groove DJ" or the "groove dancer?"

I definitely didn't mean that Chick Webb is undanceable  , just that it is difficult for the same person to like to dance to both Chick Webb and Gene Harris What the hell are you talking about? Of course you can like dancing to both. Some people like vareity you know. Um, yeah. I know plenty...

ok, how many DJs actually see THEMSEVLES as being in a camp/group? cuz I don't - I may emphasize one more than another depending on the situation, but I play both ends of the spectrum and lots in between.. and thankfully, I hear a lot of DJs who do the same. -edit: Is it really *that hard* to like ...

First off, why would recordings of that era be faster than average? When people couldn't dance to live music, what do you think they danced to? The recordings of the era. Record Labels would not produce music that was faster than the preferred speed, because at the time, people bought those recordin...

Dave Brubeck

I was watching one of the Ken Burns shows on jazz that talked about Dave Brubeck's WWII band. Were there recordings of that band, and if so, are they available and does anybody have opinions on them?

The point is not aimed at anyone in particular, nor am I inclined to begin another flame war by artificially and unnecessarily taking aim at anyone. It is just a general supplement to Peter's general (and understandable) claim that " t's kinda depressing that "swing DJ's" would ignor...

I also have Basie live at the Famous Door and in the liner notes it says "The mind is the best scratch remover". And it's totally true for me. I don't even notice defects when I'm listening, much less dancing. Of course, if you are specifically listening for "bad sound quality,"...
