Here's a different question, how do you rip audio from a DVD. I've got a DVD of several soundies that I would love to rip (the Shaw "Lady Be Good" shag soundie for example).

Whether you think swapping tunes is good or bad, clearly ripping your stuff w/o your consent is low. (It should be noted that I'm in law school, in my property class right now, and we're actually dealing with issues very much like this - Moore v. Regents of the University of California , 51 Cal. 3d ...

I like the Anita O'Day box. Its got some of her stuff w/Krupa that is not on the Krupa box - with both boxes you've got the bulk of Gene's band. The stand outs are some really good solo sides recorded in LA 1945-1948. The sideman are Zutty Singleton, Allan Reuss, Benny Carter, etc., among others. Th...

Swing Guitar Blog

I've written about vintage jazz and guitar playing several times on this board and others, trying to explain some of the things I had learned being a bandleader. I took inspiration from another blog (www.djangology.net) and decided to put up a blog as a place where I can share the techniques, tools,...

Unless you're looking for the high-fi 50's stuff, I like the Classic Chrononlogical for Cootie. 1941-1944 - Has some great proto-bop sextet sides (that still swing) and couple of orchestra sides. Definately great. The Campus Five plays 3 tunes that I got from this album, and I still have one more I ...

This doesn't yet apply to lots of CD's but I'm sure it will become more a trend: I juts bought the new NIN CD, and it doesn't come with liner notes. Instead, it just has a link to the NIN website for a pdf of liner notes/lyrics/credits. I'll bet that as mp3 sales grow, there will be an effort to giv...

Here's one that should be in everyone's collection: Summit Meetings 1939-50 - Metronome All Stars/Esquire All Stars - Fremeaux & Associes Blue Lou, a distinct version of One O'Clock Jump, All Star Strut, a great Basie tune Royal Flush, a bunch of good small group "Esquire" tunes, inclu...

Early Jazz Guitar Essentials

Here's what I would recommend to anyone looking for pre-bop jazz guitar stuff. (I was inspired by the Proper Box thread). The big stuff: Charlie Christian 4-disc box on Columbia, and the 4 disc live set on JSP Django has an almost Ellingtonian volume of material. There is a complete Django series th...

Here's what I've got: Gene Krupa - definately great. I don't think there are any other Krupa collections that could even compare. I'm sure its missing some stuff, but other than springing for the complete cronologicals, its a good as you'll do. Charlie Ventura - the first disc has some promising sma...

Moten Swing is was the out chorus for to "You're Driving Me Crazy". "I found a new baby" isn't even close - its in a minor key.

Its definately not on the REAL '38 Carnegie Hall set. The real set (on columbia) is only 2 discs - that one is 3 discs. It looks like its got some mid 40's stuff on it, like "All the Cats Join In." "Oomph" was written in 1945 by Ellis Larkins. My big band also plays a stock arran...

Sounds like he's thinking of a big band versus a small band. Considering a big band is only a tiny bit bigger than a small one in that period, the main difference is adlibs versus arrangements ala Fletcher Henderson. Gus Ramos' Blue Rhythm Orchestra in another one out here. But, they were sort of Mo...
