For the last couple of years: Sidney Bechet. I love him, and I've sure contributed to the overplaying myself, but still. As far as I'm concerned, this whole Dixieland revival thing in the swingdance community has gone too far. Remember, Bechet was booed off stage at the Savoy Ballroom. To the swing ...

Duke Ellington - 100 Rare Sessions (although it might not be the exact same recording, but it's the same song) That's not the Ellington recording, although it seems to be loosely based on it (as recorded by "Johnny Hodges and his Orchestra" in 1937). It's a nice version, though, I'd love ...

Mingus Mosaic set

First Mosaic set I'm about to pre-order that I have no intention of dj-ing anything from. Not that Mingus didn't swing - he certainly did, only not in the lindy hop way. He was still amazing, probably my favorite post-1945 jazz musician/composer. He was very much influenced by Ellington, and Ellingt...

With lyrics: "Barnacle Bill the Sailor", Hoagy Carmichael, 1930 (there's also a much later Louis Prima/Keely Smith version) "How Deep Is the Ocean", Washboard Rhythm Kings, 1932; Billie Holiday, 1954 (and many other versions) "Ol' Man River", Cootie Williams/Jerry Kruge...

Wow, that's amazing! I've seen them live, so I know what she can do, but still. Never would have guessed that that's a human voice.

My dear friend Christoffer, who plays trombone with the Old Fish Jazz Band, was very pleased with your feature on the group. You should check out his Swedish band Swing Tarturo as well. They're a young band playing a unique brand of traditional jazz with minimal instrumentation, an irreverent attitu...

I seem to notice an ugly shrill sound in badly encoded MP3:s. It's most noticeable in hi-fi recordings, in particular from sizzling ride cymbals, muted trumpets and singers singing the sound "s".

Sure thing. It's "Everybody Rock", off this excellent album. Highly recommended. It's basically Chick Webb's band after Chick's death, with Ella as the nominal bandleader. She's not singing at all, just egging the band on. And doing a good job, too!

You're welcome! I have that CD signed with a personal dedication by Frankie. Should get one by George as well, his band was one of the first I ever saw play for lindy hoppers, back in '99 - just a week after they did the Frankie 85 birthday gig recorded for the CD, in fact. Not that I knew that back...

Re: Sweet Version of Sweet Sue from Lindy Focus X

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QjKH-bidnM&feature=youtu.be Sounds quite a bit like the Bechet-Spanier Big Four 1940 version, especially the intro. That's an instrumental, though. This is probably a modern recording inspired by that one, perhaps by a European band to judge by the singer's accent.
