Re: The Big 18 - Celery Stalks at Midnight?

I wouldn't personally lump these Big 18 recordings in with all of the other 1950s recordings. Speaking as a long-time dancer, DJ and music lover, there is something about the quality of musicianship, the arrangements, and the sense of swing in the Big 18's recordings that stands out from the countl...

Re: The Big 18 - Celery Stalks at Midnight?

I guess the version of Easy Does It may have gotten some play during the recent Frankie 100 celebrations, since it's probably the first track that those of us who were lucky enough to be taught by Frankie would associate with him. He used it for his classes all the time. Interesting. There is somet...

Re: Earl Hines Deccas - as issued on LP - Decca Jazz Heritag

I am having a problem figuring out just how good the gent's Hines Deccas and transfers are. There may be no way to tell w/o listening to them.

Herbie Kay~ Rhythm Steps w Shirley Lloyd & Three Kays - 1935

This is one of my favorite snappy mid 30s tunes - totally forgotten now and maybe even then, but you can't stop listening.

What kind of rhythm dance would have been done to this?

Re: Earl Hines Deccas - as issued on LP - Decca Jazz Heritag

This is the problem album. Questions being answered~ David Lennick says - Deccas in general are a good 3% off speed in the 30s, sometimes close to 4% and I got the mono issues of all those Deccas when they came out, but they were echoy. Dave Weiner says - the Decca LP did come out in mono; also cam...

Re: Earl Hines Deccas - as issued on LP - Decca Jazz Heritag

This is the problem album. Most releases of this material since have used this album as a source, complete with echo and fake stereo. My dream is a release of this album properly remastered from the metal plates or at least original 78s. Past quote from a man on the list- 1934-35 Deccas....aaaaaak!...

Re: Earl Hines Deccas - as issued on LP - Decca Jazz Heritag

The only possible thing you might look for is the mono version - if there was one. This came out at the time when mono was being phased out of production and out of retail stores. The store I worked in had duplicate mono and stereo sections!!! Passing craziness. Sam Goody's - one side of the store- ...

Earl Hines Deccas Discussion and links

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jKI0bS9mEI Decca Jazz Heritage Series. I never thought that this would be posted online. The echo made it very hard to enjoy this album, but that was all there was......for decades. I think this is the "Simulated Stereo" aka fake stereo issue. Is there anyw...

Re: Wonderful sound systems I can't afford to own

Plays a rare Ellington unit recording! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Th-5SS0sVs&noredirect=1 That Ellington sidemen recording is phenomenal! Good quality sound too, considering it's a video of the record playing. Love 78s... So many undiscovered gems still gathering dust... :) Ya- it's a nic...
