I have Ben Webster "the Verve Years" There are a lot of good dance tracks and lots of great musicians besides Webster playing on the tracks (Peterson, Strayhorn, Teddy Wilson).

Because of this CD Websters proper box set is the next item on my too buy list.

In Mezz Mezzrow's book "really the blues" he talks about a cutting session in the mid 1930's with Fats Waller, Willie "the lion" Smith, and another piono player. He states the they couldn't figure out a winner so they called James P. Johnson in the wee hours of the morning and he...

One time I made a pretty bad request. I was at an event 4 years ago in Detroit ran by a promoter who most of you might know. She had advertised that she would have a band on Friday at the start of a weekend Lindy Hop event with Lindy Hop insturctors, but there was no band. What was worse was she was...

Most record deals involve only the record label and the composer getting any residual money. Musicans get paid an up front fee and they make the same amount of money no matter how many records are sold. off course they would get more money to cut another record if their first one was popular. Any la...

Ah ha, I found another song with someone playing the Bones. From Memphis Minnie: Queen of the blues. A 1938 recording of New Orleans Stop Time. The bones sound pretty good on here, they get equal billing with Minnie's vocals and guitar. In brother bones recordings they are up front. The vocals on th...

So here's another tricky trick someone pulled on me once. I went to DJ at a party and the host said the DJ stuff would be set up. When I got there I was supposed to use my CDs to DJ on his computer. Not thinking much of it, I did. At the time I was not much of a tech geek. I only had CD's I had neve...

So I ask the question again. Because no one has addressed it. People who think swapping music is bad because it takes away money from the record companies and indirectly from musicians. Do these people also only buy new CD's because buying used CD's gives no money to the record companies either.

I'm just curious if anyone realizes that if you are a major DJ in a popular dance club music style you get thousands of songs for free from the record companies. I knew a guy who would get around 15 records a day mailed to him for no charge from the record companies. Why? because they wanted their ...

I don't like it when a DJ has bought very few of his own CD's instead most of his music is from swaps. I think that's lame, at least support the active artists by buying some CD's.

On the Sunny Side of the Street

This is another one of those songs that I love all versions. Anyway I know this girl who lives on Sunnyside street in Chicago, she's a non dancer jazz fan who hangs out at the Green Mill Lounge. On her message recording she has this song on her recording. She didn't believe me when I told her I had ...
