Cheap and good labels/distributors
So, there's the pastperfect label (http://www.pastperfect.com) that some people have talked about. I thought it would be cool to start a resource thread on good bargain distributors/labels. I just picked up a 4 CD Slim Galliard set from Proper Records (http://www.proper.uk.com as well as http://www....

Slower version of Take the A Train?
I don't have many versions of this in my book, but I'm looking for a slower version of "Take the A Train" than the one played by Duke Ellington (which sits, generally around 160-170 bpms, it seems). Anyone got any suggestions? I suppose I could take the one I have and slow it down myself...

Lots of people see them either buying water, splitting a pitcher of water or eating the snacks and they assume that they're being cheap. They're not. Let's not assume. This probably comes across as asshole-ish, and I'll preface it with the statement that if there's cover, then I don't really think ...

I live in NYC. Here we had a little problem with most of our venue's closing (for whatever reason). Now we have a few choices: there are 2 DJ dances, there is a Friday night dance to live music and there is Monday night at luci's. I can't believe that NYC would have a shortage of danceable jazz ban...

I think the better question instead of how to bring live music _into_ a scene is how to get dancers into a live music scene. So many scenes revolve around a venue(s) that is dancer-centric. This means that if dancers want to dance to live music, it's expected that live music is brought _into_ the da...

My job as a DJ is to play swing music for swing dancers. I attempt to keep the floor packed through the music I play. First and foremost though is to play music for swing dancing. That's also my definition of my job as a DJ. However, I'm not going to be the one to dictate what does or doesn't make a...

Re: Motown
Are we changing the dance to a point where we no longer need to dance to even jazz music or no longer music that swings? Let alone swinging jazz and blues of any kind. We have dj's on this board who say yes. They are influential dj's in their own scene. and they say soul is good for the dance. I sa...

I have heard that a hard drive larger than 240 GB becomes significantly slower as the disk itself can't spin as quickly. Also, though probably not an issue these days, the USB 1.0 connection (I think most externals require USB 2.0 or Firewire) is also quite slow (not sure how this would affect DJ'in...
