How many times do you play the same artist?

What are people's rules for playing the same artist... or even two songs from the same album in the course of a set or an evening. Once in awhile when I'm high on a new album or artist with a ton of kick ass songs, I'll throw a song on early in the evening and one in the end since a majority of peop...

I didn't DJ any of the official events that weekend, but I think this is an important note by Swifty. I didn't play any real flagwavers during the band break because I considered the size of the room and the sheer number of people in it and decided that if I had some people might have been killed. D...

Most of the songs Jesse listed aren't really played much anymore. At least I haven't heard most of them at exchanges and once in awhile when I pull one of them out of my book, I get a lot of "WOW, I haven't heard that in awhile."

Just a couple of footnotes to Dave's expert suggestions. Academy has probably the best prices out of any used CD store in the city. Most, but not all of the CDs at Jazz Record Center are 10 bucks. At least the ones I always end up wanting are more expensive, but that's just me. Also they have a grea...

I got pitched to go behind the scenes for this movie last year when I worked for E! They were filming in San Fran. I couldn't convince my bosses to do a piece on it. But I am curious to see how it is.

I know of one or two people who have gotten a large portion of their collection on their laptop thru someone else. Personally, I find that they don't know their collection as well as those of us who take the time to research, listen, ask questions, and collect our music. However, I wouldn't like to ...

Out of complete laziness (or perhaps the opposite considering my search) I refused to buy that CD online. I went searching and hounding CD stores all over NYC for a copy. Tower Records eventually had a few copies in their bin. It's a Japanese import. Until someone decides it's worth printing in the ...

I got to ATLX early on Thursday to check out Alan White's Thursday night gig. It sounds like Devona's experience with the Carolina Shag DJs is similar to Alan's style. He would interject a song title while the opening was playing. No full sentence, like "This is...." He would just say &quo...

I've gotten some great song suggestions from several DJ's on this board after listening to their sets. When I end up buying those CDs and playing them on one of my sets, I'll always acknowledge the person who turned me onto that song if anyone asks me about the song I play. I think it's only fair to...

I don't write set lists, but if I know the DJ who is following me and I'm familiar with their style I'll try and clue them into a couple of songs. For example, if the DJ following me is a big Gene Harris fan, I'll make sure he knows if I played any specific GH tunes. Not that I'll try and play songs...

Easy answer: I just concentrate on doing the best job I can at the time of my shift. When I used to do Stand-up comedy (I know hard to believe that I can be funny,) some of the comics would always complain. They never wanted to open up and warm up the crowd, then if they got a later slot they hate i...

Jon Hendricks is great. I'd recommend his "Boppin at the Blue Note" it features other members of his family. His daughter used to sing with one of the NY bands here before she moved to L.A. I got to catch Jon here in NYC at a panel regarding jazz vocalists with Kurt Elling, Mark Murphy, an...
