Roy, if you chose to pick up just a few now I would recomend the Illinois Jaquet and the Lionell Hampton. Both are great. After that I would get the Fats Waller and the Woody Herman. I also have: Swing Tanzen Verbotten: Some interesting Nazi Propaganda songs but poor musicianship. Sidney Bechett: Lo...

Hey Serg! I wish I had the opportunity to hear some international DJs. Ironically we had a visiting DJ from London in Austin last night... I can't remember his last name, but his first name was Tim. He played a lot of classic big band and boogie woogie stuff. Very fun. Tina 8) Hey Tina, I think I k...

Songs from non US DJs
So I was DJing at the London Exchange this past February. I was the only American DJ there for the weekend. They had DJs from all over Europe though. On Sunday night, last dance, they had about 10 DJs doing 40 minutes shifts. There were DJs from France, Ireland, Sweden, a bunch of Brits, Denmark and...

When I was involved in organizing the MLX 2003 Battle of the DJ's we had 6 DJ's. We gave them 15 minutes each to play what they wanted to. We split it up in to 2 heats (3 DJs per heat) with one DJ coming out of each heat. Before the DJs spun they where announced. In the Final the 2 DJ's got another...

We need to upgrade our main Dual CD player here in South Florida and I am looking for suggestions. We currently have a Numark CDN-30. This unit was purchase new less than one year ago and it has always behaved like crap. It rarely reads burns. We have a budget of $400.00 for a replacement. What do y...

New Proper Records Series
I don't know if you are aware but there is a new Proper Records series out there. It is called "The Proper Introduction". They have some Blues, Country but some worthy Swing/ Jazz titles. You can see the whole list here: http://home.earthlink.net/~copaceticcomicsco/ProperIntro.html I just ...

Are there any recordings of cutting sessions? Besides the battle of the bands. If you are interested in reading more about it I suggest you to get this book: Jazz Anecdotes by Bill Crow: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0195071336/104-5286108-7603131 They say that most cutting contests were d...

Cutting Contests
So, I've been reading some Jazz books about cutting contests. Mostly the ones that happened in Kansas City and NYC in the 30's and 40's. So my question to you is: Have you even seen a live cutting contest? Do they still exist, or this is a lost art? Do we have the talent alive and willing to do it? ...

Kevin Mahogany moved to South Florida a couple of years ago. I got to see him play here twice already. He does a lot of gigs with the F.I.U. (Florida Internationl University) Big Band. He sounds pretty good. He sings a lot of Ellington songs. While they tend to be long they are still very danceable....
