The irony is, I think Reuben was DJing that contest.

Good cut. No clue. Doesn't quite sound like a period band, but I dunno.

I actually like the introductions of Now You Has Jazz (Bing and Louis) and Massachusetts (Maxine). I realize you could chop out the first 43 seconds of NYHJ, but the contrast between the meandering and the actual song, combined with the title of the song, is just too irresistable to edit. It's like ...

Although obviously the early jazz recordings were not edited, editing was used by every kind of musician (classical, jazz, whatever) as soon as it became available. I think it's safe to say that musicians would have been in favor of editing their earliest recordings if they could have. What's more,...

Sounds cool, but indie music fans will do anything to appear cooler than their brethren -- owning vinyl without even being able to play it being the #1 indicator in that article.

IMO it's just a fad among a small niche of fans/collectors.

bands played many of the vintage recordings faster than they played the same songs live, purely to meet the 3-minute time limit of 78 records. LPs freed them from that constraint. With LPs, the focus on brevity not only was lost, it sometimes shifted to "take as long as you like" so as to...

It's black, white, and gray, yes. So it seems logical to me to avoid gray and black zones and err on the side of legality (not to mention any possible fiscal compensation for jazz artists and their estates), but that's just me.

Carry on.

I usually rewind a bit and listen to Lester's sax solo on Woodside several times if I can. The moment when the band falls out and he lays into those rolling triplets give me the extreme happy feet. Embarrassing confession: I usually yell "Ladies and gentlemen ... Lester Young!" just before...

I can live a completely honest virtuous life for sixty years, but if I shoplift a pack of gum, it's still shoplifting. I understand where you're coming from -- I have bought a few thousand albums myself, and I like to think that it gives me a bit of wiggle room as far as legality, but I know that it...

Why do hip-hop/electronica DJs have nicknames? Because the very first "name" DJs in the 70s had nicknames such as Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, and Grandmaster Flash. There is a long tradition of nicknames in African-American culture. Pretty much all electronic music DJs owe their existence...

Exactly my thoughts. One of the best Lindy remixes was taking Wade in the Water, speeding it up, and overdubbing it with (I think it was) "Cottontail." A bit sloppy at points, but brilliant idea! (And I'm not big a fast-Lindy fan.) Marcelo did it as a joke, not as fodder for dancing or to...

Re: 2007-06-27 @ Nick's Nightclub in Alexandria, VA

" Blues Naughty (different) " ... by " Sidney Bechet " from the album " Kyle Smith's ABW2007 CD " Sorry if this seems snarky, but this doesn't seem like it would be a properly licensed CD. I know we're all probably tired of yakking about copyright by now, but I definit...

The biggest issue for me in sound quality of the original recording is dynamic range. Pretty much every major advance in sound recording technology has increased the range of frequencies that the equipment can record. In addition... On 30s recordings the horns (mid-range frequencies) often drown out...

Need music recommendation: Do You Know What It Means...

...to Miss New Orleans? I'm looking for a version that is relatively mellow in tempo (120-180), good sound quality, relatively romantic, and preferably sung by Louis Armstrong. If you can point me to any sound clips of your recommendation that would be awesome too (but I can look it up as well). I h...
