I've heard lots of DJs talk about 'the wave', and the mountain ride tagging idea seems to fit with this. Hmmm...I wonder if this is just a terminology thing. When I talk about playing a "wave" I'm referring to tempo. I want to start slow, then go to fast, then go back to slow. So that the...

Re: Who Gets Paid?

The only exception is where a DJ has a good national following. The other exception is the DJ who has sound gear. I have a professional grade sound system that can accommodate even the largest ballrooms at "rock concert" SPL levels...if required (it never is). I have pro grade CD players,...

Re: Who Gets Paid?

Do most DJs on here get paid or compensated for their services, whether they be local or national? I won't try to speak for others, but my guess is that the vast majority of DJs here do not make enough to "break even" on the expense of being a DJ. I doubt that many can even cover the dire...

Live bands create a great "visual theater" that is almost impossible for a DJ to match. The way that a DJ can reply to that is by using the larger range of music (artists, tempos, arrangements, etc) to their advantage. Live musicians like to "explore" the bridges and solos and ja...

I seriously doubt that the biggest obstacle to improving his sets is matching songs by key. I'm sure you're right, but, responding to Albert's point, I think perhaps being aware of the relative keys of different tracks would help create a fresher-sounding sequence of songs for the dancers. Now that...

I don't know Albert, and I've never heard him spin Well I would highly recommend that you do get more familiar with him. Paul is a clarinetist who leads the Boilermaker Jazz Band . He is one of the greatest band leaders in the country currently playing for swing dancers, not a DJ at all. Jesse Exce...

Hayden, Kitkat is correct. I don't know Albert, and I've never heard him spin - but I seriously doubt that the biggest obstacle to improving his sets is matching songs by key. I am not trying to single Albert out individually. The problem of finding the next song is one of "being in the moment....

Re: Competitive bid to hire a DJ?

OK, but seriously, what would you guys have set for an hourly fee for this very vague description (assuming they provide the sound system and I'm just plugging in)? I'd set a base fee plus and hourly rate. Even without the load in, you will need some prep time for this event. I'd also insist on a c...

Time-Life Music has loads of 3-4CD boxed sets that feature music from the 60's and 70's. I see them on sale at various warehouse clubs for about $20...that's reasonably inexpensive if you can figure out a style - Classic Rock, Singers & Songwriters, etc, etc. My uncle has musical tastes that sou...

Wow! It sounds as though you have an impressive setup Stan (although that's sort of implied by your user name  ). So, whereas I record old 30s tracks on CD by importing them into iTunes on my computer, you import them via your Behringer external EQ box, into your sound card, using your sound ...

At this point, I generally prefer to record through my 31 band EQ. That has produced the best results of any method I've tried. The frequencies that need to be cut vary with each new recording. --Stan Graves Just curious Stan, when you say 'record' through your 31 band EQ, what do you mean. Are you...

The hiss was in the original recording ... There are several software packages that include "automatic" (or more accurately, pre-set) hiss reducers. Some are good, some are not. Those software tools are always a good place to start. --Stan Graves Can you name any of the 'good' software to...

The hiss was in the original recording. When old(er) recordings are put onto a CD, there is a tendency to increase the volume...following the "louder is better" mentality. If someone does not take the time to minimize the hiss during that process, it will get louder along with the music. T...
