Not sure about "Obscure", but if you play anything from a "Laserlight" disc, then yes ;) which is unfortunate cause some of their sessions are great, like the Earl Hines live broadcasts from the late 40's. although the recordings on the nat king cole trio recordings aren't that ...

I've only gotten paid to DJ twice. I would have done both for free, but there were situations where I really did need to get reimbursed. Once was in LA, where I had to drive 4 hours to get there, and 4 hours back... the same night. So after gas, food, and where in tear, I probably broke even. The ot...

PS: Jesse, THANK YOU for the awesome article! Very welcome. I should update it, as new technology has become available... as well as new software versions. Whereas I didnt used to consider OtsJuke a viable solution due to the proprietary format, they have renamed it OtsDJ, and added direct mp3 supp...

I've been thing about using one of the VIA EPIA (aka Eden) boards to build a semi-portable system, not quite a laptop but much smaller than a desktop. It's basically a 17cm (6.7") square board with everything on board. There is one PCI slot (for a second sound card for example), TV out, the M ...

That could go either way for me.

Local Dance DJing: Computer
Out of Town DJing: Original CD in binders
Radio DJ: Original CD in binders

I chose "Computer" because that's what I do the most.

Also, I'll be copying my originals to backups very soon.

http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/answerstips/story/0,24330,2413080,00.html I reviewed all of those. VTT (Virtual Turn Tables) is no longer supported (last updated in 2001), and has some major issues. I used it for about a year before I found BPM Studio. PCDJ is pretty good and the best price, but...

Re: Laptop DJing

I'm etting tired of ripping, burning, rearranging mixes, making mixes of music people like so I have it on hand and keeping seperate playlists. So I think I'll go with a laptop. I've been told to get 2 sound cards so that I can listen to a tune while another is playing. I assume one tune goes throu...

Yeah, my laptop has 3 USB ports and a Firewire port. I'm a bit hesitant to get a USB external due to the relatively slow transfer rate compared to Firewire. I guess the other question is how big a drive I need. I think I have about 10 GBs of music right now. Would 120 GBs be excessive? USB 2.0 is f...

The obvious would be MP3's or OGG's on CD or other removable media. Does the notebook have USB2 or Firewire? I believe you can get external hard drives (basically a desktop drive in an external enclosure) that would add a lot of capacity ... it probably means one more piece of equipment and another...

Here in Connecticut we very often end Swing dances with a Waltz. "Rainbow Connection", either Kermit the Frog's or Kenny Loggins' version, is a nice way to end a night. A local favorite is "The Lover's Waltz" by Jay Ungar & Molly Mason. (Peter Davis and some of the other LHH...

Never considered it a no-no, just annoying usually.

I'd say I only play a few songs that don't have a real ending, but I think that's just coincidental to the fact that most swing and Jazz bands like true endings.

I'm with the "no politics at dances" crowd. Might want to throw in some anti-abortion or pro-choice protest songs in the same evening to really stir things up if you do though.... :-) Warren Ya, grab a couple of them anti-semetic Swing songs the Germans put out to counteract ours.... i th...

Re: Bix Beiderbecke

What does everything think of his music? A long time ago I picked up an album, and really enjoyed it. Didn't have much that I considered dance music, but I loved it. Once I got past some of the shrill clarinet/sax playing, I enjoyed it even more. I also recently picked up the Bix Proper Box set, an...

I wholeheartadly agree. I keep politics off the dance floor.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I started dancing because it was fun, and it was an escape from the everyday world.
