Must be with Lionel Hampton's Orchestra. Benny Carter on alto sax. Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Charlie Christian on guitar, Cozy Cole on drums - that's one star-packed session!

There are a dozen songs on the set that I could not be without as a DJ. Extremely sharply executed, clever arrangements, in super hifi, and not released on any other decent compilations. Stealin' Apples, Zaggin' with Zig, Don't Be That Way, Cocoanut Grove, Take It, The Count (The Count!!!), Pound Ri...

I've noticed the 'Hallmark' label have reissued a lot of old recordings recently - you can find them on Amazon and eMusic if you search for the Hallmark label. Related to this: I just noticed that there's a new Bob Chester collection (The Bob Chester Story) out on Hallmark. Poor quality, but, a poo...

This is a very nice compilation of 30s small-band swing. Only the first four tracks are by Maxine Sullivan - the rest are by others. 'Off Time' by Gene Sedric (v. Myra Johnson) is a real nugget.

Oh, and this is Kid Ory, live at the Beverly Cavern 1949. The clip has been up here before, a couple of years ago:

Yes, that's the last track on side 2 of the LP. It's side 1 (tracks 1-8) that has the speed problem.

The album can also be found on Spotify, under the name "East Rocker"! (sounds like a reggae album title...)

How can you tell it was dubbed at the wrong speed, Anton? Is the pitch off? Or do you have the recordings somewhere else to compare? I think the vibrato on the reeds sounds way too fast, and the drums are too high-pitched. There is also a distinct difference in sound (and average tempo) between the...

Ha! There's now a Hallmark CD out named 'Easy Rocker', which contains 'Definition and Swing' and some other rare tracks. A dub of the SoS LP it seems. http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Rocker/dp/B007QT894M It sounds as though the first half of the LP was dubbed at the wrong speed! D'oh! At least 'Definitio...

Very nice, indeed! It's a Langworth transcription, so excellent sounding. (I remember reading a nice article about the Langworth recordings that I thought I should post a link to here, but now I can't find it...)
