Tonight there was a live band, with a DJ spinning between its sets. This DJ played "Wade in the Water" twice!!!

A few more that may be familiar, but are still useful.

CD Universe lets you preview nearly every track of almost every CD.

FYE also lets you preview much of the music, but at different points than does CD Universe (for example, 1:20 instead of 0:30)

GEMM has tons of hard-to-find recordings.

I'm not sure that I can recognize it 100% of the time, but Teddy Wilson's playing is relatively easy for me to recognize.

I found a biography that is more thorough than what's in liner notes:

Django Reinhardt

For the next installment of our "artists series," I'd like to discuss Django Reinhardt. I know little about him, aside from a basic bio from some liner notes. I enjoy his music (I may be addicted to "Minor Swing"), but I find that DJs don't play it very often here in the Tampa Ba...

I enjoy a lot of Benny Goodman's stuff, even though it may not swing as hard as Basie's or others'. Some of my favorite BG tracks include: "Bach Goes to Town" (approx. 190BPM) (yes, he does) "Air Mail Special" (215) "Bugle Call Rag" (tends to run about 250BPM) "Bum...

What are we missing?

While reading the thread on digitizing music from 78rpm records, I became interested in the process. Today I visited some antique-shops in town to see what they had. One of them had a large collection of 78s, many of which contained songs and groups with which I was unfamiliar. I began wondering abo...

Re: Transferring from 78s to CD

I know all about the legal ramifications and arguments about copying/burning music- but my dilemma is that while I try not to encourage piracy, I can't find these songs on any of the released material. Just curious: how would copying music from a record and then burning it to a CD be different, leg...

Re: DJ BPM

For kicks, try measuring the BPM at the beginning of a song, during solos, and towards the end to see how much our type of music can vary without drum machines and synthesizers. Oh, yeah! I usually find a "typical" part of the song, most often in the middle, and measure that. Instead of n...

Cool Sounds

I've got a recording of "Hi Ya, Sophia," wherein Benny and Lionel play the same notes at the same time. The effect is very cool - it reminds me of little candies, perhaps Skittles (not sure how else to describe it). What other recordings have unusual/cool sounds (however you define that)? ...

How about having GT (Groove Terminator) DJ a swing event? I danced lindy with "Here Comes Another One," and it was a blast.

To clarify... One night, same DJ, same version. Not very far apart, perhaps within about 1 1/2 hours of each other - I know that can be very subjective, but it annoyed me, and I think it annoyed one of my friends. I have been thinking about playing significantly-different versions of the same song. ...

Playing the same song twice

I've seen/heard this done, and when it happens I am not a happy camper. What do you think about playing the same song twice?
