Re: Searching for a recording - Night Club Suite - 1933 - Gr

It's been nine years, and I suspect John doesn't read this forum anymore, but Peter Mintun acutally tracked down some recordings from, it appears, the Carnegie Hall concert, and posted them on Soundcloud in the past two years. https://soundcloud.com/peter-mintun/sets/green-night-club-6-impressions T...

Re:

a studio band with two recordings FYI, I have a 3rd album by many of the same folks called Live Echoes Of The Best In BIG BAND BOOGIE. The band's moniker was changed to The Will Bradley Johnny Guarnieri Band. I liked this the least of the 3 by far, but thought some of you might find it interesting ...

Re: "Secret" Tracks

If anything, I think digital distribution has made it less likely that DJs will sound similar. The total available library of swing music is much larger now than it was ten or twenty years ago. There's more stuff in print, it's easier to preview it, and it's easier and cheaper to purchase it. It's t...

Re: [OPEN] Work Song

Also slightly related: do DJs even still play "Work Song" at dancers, or is this simply a walk down memory lane enjoying the nostalgia of the early-2000's "groove" years? I'm not sure I'm much of a representative sample, but I still play Nina's every now and then. It's been a wh...

Re: [OPEN] Work Song

There's always the original from Nat Adderley's "Work Song" album, but it's closer to 150 bpm:

Re: [OPEN] Work Song

Need more information. "Everyone" plays different things in different areas of the world.

Nina Simone and Oscar Brown Jr. both have been played a lot over the years. There's also a Sammy Davis Jr. one with Count Basie that's slightly slower.

Re: Help with locating a Song or the Album

That looks like a copy of the IAJRC album onto CD, and with a misleading cover (since it doesn't mention that half the tracks are Barnet and not Goodman). It's the same track as on the Hep CD. Anyway, glad you found what you wanted!

Re: Help with locating a Song or the Album

It's *really* hard to find an album or song like that. "Hartford Stomp" is also a song title, so you get a bunch of false hits that way. Do you know what year the track was recorded, what year the album you mention was released, what label the album was released on, etc.? If you have a lin...

First, let me point you at another source: http://jazzpetitebourgogne.radio-canada.ca/en (Leave off the /en si t'es francophone.) There's an ebook book associated with this documentary, too (I haven't read it): https://www.amazon.com/Burgundy-Jazz-Little-Story-Montreal-ebook/dp/B00S8NCKPO http://www...

Re: Turnable for 78 RPM

My guess is that most of us are far from experts on turntables, let alone ones that play 78s. I do know a few things: 1) You need a separate cartridge, or, at the very least, a separate stylus. Not only that, but different era 78s use different stylus widths. For the best sound, you want to make sur...

See Mosaic thread for more, but it seems that the first four volumes might also be released on CD by Mosaic in January.

Re: mosaic sets

Savory recordings, coming on Mosaic in January...? Can it really be? The Mosaic Records site itself says nothing about this yet. And for 2019, Louis Armstrong 1950's Columbia recordings. That's the era of "Satch Plays Fats" and "Armstrong Plays Handy". http://indianapublicmedia.o...

Re: Need help, can anyone identify version of this flying ho

I think it's the 1945 Illinois Jacquet recording, with a cut in the intro (taking out a few 8-counts of the Rag Mop theme). Illinois Jacquet and his All Stars: Russell Jacquet (tp), Henry Coker (tb), Illinois Jacquet (ts), Arthur Dennis (bar), Sir Charles Thompson (p), Ulysses Livingston (g), Billy ...

Re: *OPEN* Lindyfest 2015, Things Ain't What They Used to Be

I poked around in standard discographies, and I cannot find a session with Hodges leading and Buck Clayton playing, nor one with Clayton leading and Hodges playing. Moreover, I don't think that sounds like Hodges. Not that I can offer much of an alternative. The drumming sounds a little modern, and ...
