Good reissues skip over the 78 stage It ain't necessarily so. John RT Davies generally used 78s, and his remasterings often sound better to me than remasterings done from original metal parts - especially when it comes to harsh treble sounds. They may not be quite as clear, but they're much more pl...

Happy 100th birthday Benny Goodman!

On May 30, 1909, Benjamin David Goodman was born in Chicago, the ninth child of twelve to parents David and Dora, poor Jewish immigrants from Russia. He would grow up to do fine things. Let's all celebrate his 100:th birthday on Saturday!

Which transfers would you recommend for rare mid-30's Ellington (Steppin into Swing Society, et al)? I honestly hadn't bothered to take a closer look at the Ellington set. If there's rare stuff there, of course that may be reason enough to get it - thanks for the tip! I was just very disappointed w...

Theoretically it's great that you can get collections including both Columbia and RCA Victor material, but the result is not so impressive. The only set I have is the Glenn Miller (because I needed a greatest hits collection of his for certain non-lindy hop functions) and it really feels carelessly ...

Happy birthday Duke Ellington, 110!

Today, April 29, Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington would have been 110. We'll have a celebration tonight (possibly playing Take the "A" Train back to back with B-side The Sidewalks of New York). How about you?

Don't forget Jack Teagarden, Red McKenzie, Bing Crosby, Mildred Bailey, Joe Venuti, Bunny Berigan, and my personal favorite, one of the biggest pioneers of jazz guitar, Eddie Lang. No way am I forgetting any of those guys. Eddie Lang rocks! Trivia: You probably know that Eddie's real name was Salva...

Eyeball wrote:Did you play the original or the 1945 Capitol re-make? Ate they really close, do you know?
The original (the remastering I have has awesome sound quality for the period). I haven't heard the remake, so I couldn't say how close they are.

I dj:d Paul Whiteman's 1928 "San" last night. It went down great, especially among the charleston dancers. He's way underappreciated.

Of course, being able to afford players like Bix and Tram helps.

It is expensive to produce quality remasters from the original masters that sit in the big companies' vaults. It is cheap to copy other labels' remasters. This is very true. However, JSP also do their own remasterings. They used to have John R T Davies remastering for them; the Django set is done b...

the django i'm not too excited about, because jsp has put out a very good django series with excellent sound. the only reason to get the mosaic is the booklet. i keep meaning to have a listen to it at my local library, but i can't imagine it sounding better than john r.t. davies's jsp restorations....

there's some good interview and dancing footage of bunny on "no maps on my taps", nierenberg's first tap documentary. (his second, "about tap", is very good, too, but doesn't have briggs.) on the "live at the greek theatre los angeles" duke & ella cd, bunny perform...

I don't think J-h:n's statement about black music representing the future and white music representing the past is a very good way of saying this, is more or less inaccurate and overgeneralized Oh, I'm not saying that statement is something I believe in. Like you point out, it's grossly overgeneral...

Eyeball wrote:In reality, it is gay music v straight music. Strayhorn-gay, other guy-straight.
Now you're getting the hang of this! See, gay people had to go "underground" in those days, that's why the song is about the subway! Very good!
