I have bought a few things from them and never had any problems. Like you, I was suspicious at first about whether they actually had the items in stock, but yes, they did!

Some of these methods seem quite complex, especially when people are buying equipment and such. A simple "tapper" program is all you need, it takes 5-10 secs per song, and is accurate enough for swing-DJing. It's not like we need to beat-match or anything. Although it's nice having the inf...

My favourite purchases thus far would probably be: Apollo Jump (2CD) Lucky Millinder (Proper) Many tracks that are great to DJ. Fun without being too cheesy. 1944 Count Basie and His Orchestra (Hindsight) Great energy, Artie Shaw has a guest spot, and my favourite version of Jumpin at the Woodside. ...

Don't ge me wrong, our scene can still bust it out when it wants to. There was a live gig the night before that was fast and furious (hmm, maybe that was the problem :)) It was just a one-off flat night. I mean it could be that everyone actually enjoyed themselves, and were having too much fun just ...

'The Vibe' and the '135bpm Zone'

I felt I had a bit of a failure on Saturday night and I'm wondering why. The energy of the room was lacking and it was hard to keep the floor busy. A couple of tracks got NO dancers :( I understand that there are many outside influences that contribute to how inspired a room of dancers feel (tempera...

Update: I picked up a copy of Chronogical Classics 1934-1936 on E-Bay and I can appreciate the tempo dilemma. The disc has lots of awesome tracks, mostly > 200bpm. My favourites would be: Yes! Yes! (211bpm) There's Rhythm In Harlem (basically a much better "In the Mood" that predates the G...

I'd suggest giving each DJ at least 3 songs in a row. We had a DJ battle here where we alternated tracks, which was fine, but nobody knew (or cared) who was playing what. I think small brackets would work better - especially if you ae going to declare a winner.

Yeah I thought of ripping the audio, and I have the software to do it, but unfortunatley the audio quality on the DVD is quite poor. I'd be reluctant to DJ with it, but it would probably be fine just for listening.

Rushing/Williams duet?

I just finished watching a DVD of the 1962 Newport Jazz Festival and I was surprised to find Joe Williams and Jimmy Rushing singing together on 'Goin' To Chicago'. It was very cool.

Anyone know if it's available on CD, or if they sang together on other occasions?

A great swingin track. I like Ellington Live at the Blue Note (59), and I just watched a live Ellington version from Newport 62 on DVD, so I'm going to see if I can track down a nice audio transfer of the performance.

I tend to agree.

I don't think there's a whole lot of artistic merit in the way lyrics were added to something like Opus One "...so they call it opus one". But turning something like 'Never No Lament' into 'Don't Get Around Much Anymore' seems to have more integrity about it.
