Beautiful things--who sings this?

I'm not sure if there has already been a thread about this, but I've talked with Rob (Raleigh) about this a few months ago and we couldn't figure it out. But there's this song in an ad for ?American Express Blue something? card that plays in the theaters before movies/during previews. I've seen a fe...

Is it about numbers? Or is it about courtesy to other musicians? I thought this guy was completely rude.

I have a background as a musician (but am not a math person by any means), so I started DJing because I thought the person hosting a radio show at the campus station sucked and I applied for that position the next year and got it. I became swing DJ by default because we had a very small scene and I ...

Anyway, on a related note, the liner notes mention (as does nearly every summary of Jamaican music) that the early Ska scene was heavily influenced by Southern USA music especially what they could hear over the radio coming out of New Orleans or Florida. So what I wonder is if there is music worth ...

I think the vocals have something to do with the "sweet", like the quality of voice, tone and if it is actually sung softly or picked up softly on the recording. I'm thinking specifically of Jimmie Lunceford's "My Blue Heaven" when the vocalists come in. It does sound sweet...

I've gotten paid twice, once in another town and once when a local communnity group hosted a salsa/swing night and I split the bill with the salsa DJ. I keep getting put in a position where I don't get paid, or I feel greedy asking for money because I really want to scene to grow and I know they nee...

Most of this thread seems to be geared toward exchanges and national events, but what about locally? Small scene or large, do you get paid for a weekly/monthly dance? Do people expect you to show up for free or are you regularly getting paid? Or do you run the venue and not care about compensation, ...

Ska for Swing (241)

My former life as a ska DJ has me thinking about playing music from my other collection, but I've been apprehensive about mixing ska at a swing dance. Recently I DJ'd in Raleigh and played Millie Small's "My Boy Lollipop," which went over extremely well, so I was wondering what, if any, sk...

This is all very informative. I just recently started hosting a swing night at a restaurant/bar/entertainment venue in town and since I work there and we don't bring in much money at the bar, it's all for free. I spin for free, admission is free, and use of the space is free. So with the royalties, ...

I played Hey Ya the other night at a dance and everyone loved it. It took a minute for them to get out of the booty groove and into the swing groove, but it worked and it was loads of fun to see the non-dancers in the bar perk up and pay attention...and do a little dancing themselves...

Yay! I love the Cowboy Bebop music :D My boyfriend got me hooked on this stuff, it's always playing in his car. He is a jazz musician who is into anime, so it's the perfect fit for him--he recently did an arrangement of What Planet Is This? for combo instead of big band that turned out really kickas...
