John, sometimes your attitudes about music come off as something other than "this is good music, you might like it". It comes across as "this is good music, someday the uneducated will learn to appreciate it", which is a little bit irritating. (Yes, I have that irritating habit a...

Is that really Confirmation? Maybe it's an excerpt from the middle of a version, but I don't hear the head of Confirmation anywhere in the clip.
I also don't remember the stop-time riffs in the song either.

My two favorite record stores in college were Poo-Bah's (local Pasadena shop) and Tower. Pretty much the first record store I ever went to in LA was the original Tower Records on the Sunset Strip and I remember boggling at the ENORMOUS number of CDs (compared to most stores back then). I used to buy...

If you buy the set that comes in what looks like a book, with bound black and brown cloth covers and really, really nice liner notes, I have some advice. Do NOT keep the loose CDs inside the book. If you store the book upright, eventually the weight of the CDs will sink into the glue that holds the ...

I recall someone bothered to ask an old-timer about song lengths before and that if a song went on too long, the dancers just agreed to finish it and go find another partner.

Seems reasonable to me.

DJs play for dancers. But Allen said it best: However, I really get annoyed when they chop out horn solos, because, in their opinion, they are too lengthy and boring, and, perhaps, make the recording too long for dancing. My advice to them is to play another shorter recording . I think dancers like ...

I think that's kind of naive. Almost every "popular" song recorded today is either recorded to be radio suitable or remixed to be radio suitable by everyone involved in the process. As John points out, I'm referring mainly to jazz music. I'm sure many jazz musicians don't care what happen...

MIDI is a communication protocol that allows one instrument to "play" another, and to provide for converting the timing and pitch into numbers. You can record a MIDI version of a real-time performance (e.g. piano) and play it back and essentially what you have is a player piano roll; a per...

#3 is Black and Tan Fantasy. No idea who the artist is, but someone on the clarinet has a REALLY good low register.

heat 3 song 2 is Bag's Groove from Night Train. OP is instantly recognizable.

Wish I could identify song 1 that heat, it's somewhat familar.

Yes, I say How dare anyone change anything: How dare the arranger change the original composition, How dare the musician add that syncopation to the end of that chorus arrangement, How dare the recording producer tell the musician to play in a particular way, How dare the recording engineer turn do...

Here is a quick synopsis of kitkat's analytical thought process:

Is the music scratchy and old? It's Reuben.
Is the person I'm dancing with scratchy and old? It's Swifty.
