Re: mosaic sets

Actually, I say go for it. It's a lot of great music with great quality. The Gramercy Five material in particular is fun and great for dancing and I haven't heard it in better sound on other releases.

If you still really want Helen Forrest (and other) vocal numbers you can find them elsewhere.

"Alreet! You don’t have to be up among the birds in other words convening?"

I think the rest of your transcription is correct.

Re: One O'Clock Jump - Versions?

In my opinion, the original 1937 Count Basie "One O'Clock Jump" is the one you want. 168bpm, 3 minutes long, and builds beautifully. Also check out : Metronome All Star Band from 1941 (173bpm, 3:29) - some real all-stars in that lineup. Benny Goodman's 1955 version (191bpm, 3:10) that goes...

Re: 75th anniversary of "In the Mood" 8-1-1939

Okay, but credit where credit is due... This started life as "Tar Paper Stomp" recoded by Wingy Manone back in 1930. Then was used for a section of "Hot and Anxious" buy the Henderson Orchestra in 1931 Then Joe Garland recomposed it for Edgar Hayes in 1938. They did a great versi...

Re: Freddie Green

The Basie rhythm section was widely regarded as this perfect, cohesive swinging unit. Jo Jones (and Green, Page and Basie) had honed their roles as parts of a machine that was greater than the sum of its parts. I'm sure Krupa would have been apprehensive about breaking up that team by placing himsel...

Re: Freddie Green

that's Krupa on drums. Bet he felt like a fraud that day. How come? Substituting for Jo Jones in the great Basie rhythm section with Freddie Green and Walter Page. Krupa may have had all the fame as the legendary drummer showman from the Goodman Orchestra but I bet he knew what the real score was.

Re: Freddie Green

Haven't heard of that one. I'd say its unlikely.

I've read that rhythm guitars were set up in a way that made it unsuitable for them to solo anyway.

And yes, that's Krupa on drums. Bet he felt like a fraud that day.

Re: Freddie Green

At the 1938 Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall concert, Benny unexpectedly pointed to Freddie to solo. You can hear him take the solo at around the 12 minute mark.

(Note that most releases of the concert before the 1999 remaster edited this bit out. Look for the 16:35 minute version.)

Never too much info!

I have a few of these tracks on CD from good sources, but all from compilations.
