Re: Fletcher Henderson's Sextet - 1950

Wait! never mind...it's only available in the **Australian** iTunes store! As soon as I try to buy it I find out my account is only eligible to purchase from the US store. Anton, do you know of another spot to buy it digitally? I actually set up an Australian iTunes account last year since they hav...

Re: Fletcher Henderson's Sextet - 1950

This CD should be the one to get:

http://www.discogs.com/Fletcher-Henders ... se/4934648
http://www.allmusic.com/album/fletcher- ... 0001621611

Digitally, it's available on a dubious Hallmark compilation entitled 'C Jam Blues'.

Another nice example is 'Put on Your Old Grey Bonnet' [1937] by Jimmie Lunceford. The main melody is played/sung at 175 bpm, while the rhythm section is rompin' away at 350 bpm.

He is indeed amazing. I'm seriously thinking about involving him in some remastering project. Anyone else here been in contact with him?

Relistened to Willie Bryant. I don't know why I don't play more of his stuff. 'Long About Midnight for example, is a great little track, and 210bpm is not that scary. Bryant's music is great - it's the sound quality that lets it down for me. Yeah it's pretty much only available on those Classics, w...

Mora's 2000 cover of said version. It's a small little detail that I wish Mora's drummer had included when that band covered this version. Mora's Modern Rhythmists recording of the song is basically the Basie arrangement. A touch faster. A bit lighter in flavor. It's probably my favorite modern rec...

The Hines set has arrived, finally! Time to plow through the 171 tracks...

Note that the set lacks the 17 tracks (three sessions) that the band recorded for Decca in 1934-1935. It is really annoying, because those tracks are among his very best and very much in need of remastering.

They are both Django songs (Philippe Brun/Quintette du Hot Club de France) - the first one is 'Harlem Swing' and the second one is 'Swing 41'. These versions are apparently by the Hot Sugar Band (edited and spliced together).

The last song is the slower, alternative take of Pee Wee Russell's "Baby Won't You Please Come Home" (1938). James P Johnson plays the characteristic piano intro.

It's available on the Complete H.R.S. Sessions (Mosaic Records).

The second one is Charlie Barnet - Ogoun Badagris [1939].

The first one is something modern.
