I was talking to Michael McQuaid about this track last night at a gig.
They play it as part of their playlist for the Red Hot Rhythmakers.

From Spirituals To Swing [Carnegie Hall Concert]

I came across this by accident [reading a NY Times Review of "In Search Of the Blues" - an interesting discussion in itself] and my the sake of those as ignorant as myself started this thread. There is a 3 CD collection from the concert (circa 1938) http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg...

This review on allmusic makes some interesting comments about his shift from hot stuff to more ballady stuff. Looks like driven by desire for commercial success. http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:hnfrxqt0ldte Coincidentally the CD in question I have sitting in my to be ripped pile at h...

Great track - I think it is "Just Jivin' Around" - a little typo
I found it lurking in my collection. You might find it also under Lester Young as he seems to feature on the track with the Sammy Price band.

Graeme Bell is an icon of Australian jazz. Interesting interview with him at: http://www.abc.net.au/talkingheads/txt/s1716975.htm Mentions circumstances of trip to Prague and something about how Australian jazz sound was perceived as being different. Also a bit more information about trip and the co...

Interesting discussion. I find as a DJ I have my own overplayed songs that are not necessarily overplayed in a scene. I have old favourites that I fall back to get something happening. Just a small side discussion - I love the song Evenin as well. The version I play most is by Girls From Mars - grea...

I mentioned this on balboanation but there might be more traffic here :) I read really good reports about the DJed music (and the live music) at the recent All Bal Weekend and was wondering if some of the DJs were prepared to post playlists (or send them directly to me). I am getting a little tired ...

I agree that Lindy Hop was created in the context of live music, but this context was bands playing for dancers. There was a lot of music that was created to be played not for dancers eg some of Duke Ellington stuff. Difference today is that most bands focus is not playing for dancers. An example, I...
