I think switching sets is tough when you're just starting out, but that in time they can be as much fun as anything. I have many fond memories of DJing 1-3 song sets with Shorty Dave, Jesse & Manu (we all played one song each and someone started us playing different versions of "Moanin'&quo...

Monty's version of "Blues for Stephanie" is awesome (I also like George Gee's orch. version -I prefer both to Basie's orginal). it's from the "European reunion" album:

If you don't like rock & roll requests...

The first time I went to L.A. I was shocked by how much people danced to rock & roll music. I DJed at 4 venues and got several requests each time.

If only I knew then what I know now:

I kinda agree Brian, but the reason most promoters put less emphasis on the first DJ is that people are always late. Newbies tend to show up first and then the more experienced dancers. If you have a newer DJ who may not be used to an 'exchange crowd', then they might do a lot better DJing for the (...

Oscar Brown Jr. is in the hospital

Some of you might have met Oscar's son Napoleon when Oscar played in Philly last February. Napoleon had writen me about a month or two ago about Oscar's spinal infection, but they thought he was OK. I just got this info. from my Dad: ++++++++++++ Legendary Singer, Songwriter, Playwright, Oscar Brown...

I sometimes DJ similar dances and it is hard to please everyone. I totally agree with Rayned's selections although I've played Prima's and Henderson's versions of SSS and the newbies don't want any part of it. :) Besides Calloway and Jordan, I'd strongly recomend Slim and Slam; even though some peop...

That's awesome! I wonder how much of his Hothouse sets are swingin' as he spans a number of genres. I've been in touch with his agent (daughter?) and am working to try to get him to NYC for a swing gig sometime. Roy or anyone else in Chicago, you should definitely try to get him for a local gig...t...

Thank you all so much for helping me! the reality is that with the workshops starting tonight, i haven't had any time to fool with this stuff so i'm going to going with the simplest set up: Seperate mics and mixer feeding an MD recorder. fortunately I've done this a bunch with chamber music and jazz...

What's interesting to me is that I've been too two events within the last two months that had a couple dances set up where if all you had was CDs you couldn't DJ. (all they had were amps and speakers) I've seen that happen at local events, but nothing big... I thought that carrying my laptop around...

You know, it's kind of funny that I started this thread with an interest in DJing from my laptop and I have decided to forget it. At all the events I have been to, some laptop DJ has had "something" go wrong. Or they didn't have the right adaptors. Or the volume from their laptop was so lo...

Thanks for the advice up to now. So far, I'm planning on using the MD as a back-up, but the editing capabilities of an MD are limited. There's also the issue of transfering from MD to CD which means a loss in quality. But I do love minidiscs; I wish the format had taken off like it should have. :( A...

Recording live onto my PC.

Here's a potentially great situation with a serious problem: Oscar brown Jr. is letting us record the dance this Saturday. He wants nothing but a copy of the music; we can share the music with DJs for free. :) I don't have equipment though. We are thinking of using the sound mixing console's "e...
