Re: 2 videos-songs from Harlem 2011

Pretty sure this one is 'Down Home Jump' by Lionel Hampton (and I must say I love the dancing to this ;))
It sure is. That's Budd Johnson on clarinet, and the excellent drumming of Alvin Burroughs, who used to play with Walter Page's Blue Devils. Agree about the dancing!

Haydn says it very well. Oh, and if by "Keep rhythm in sync", you mean stick to the exact same BPM for several songs in a row, I'd advise against it. It will get very monotonous to dance to the same tempo for a long time. You want to vary the tempo a bit, but not too much. Don't jump all o...

Re: Bear Family sets

Ella Mae Morse 5-CD Set Barrelhouse, Boogie and the Blues Ella Mae Morse is great, but if you don't feel the need to own a huge box set, this is an excellent one-disc sampler. A couple of semi-dancable tracks, even. I have a few sets of country music from Bear Family - and they are things of beauty...

I've asked myself the same question. My friend and dj colleague Janne often plays several songs of the same artist in a row, and when I first noticed this it instinctively felt "wrong". But thinking about it, I really couldn't come up with a good reason why. Sure, if you play lots of simil...

Don't you think that mostly had to do with Buster Smith being such a huge influence on the young Charlie Parker?

Wonderful news! I've heard rumours of this set for a long time, but I'd almost given up hope that it would ever be released.

Oscar Alemán didn't play gypsy swing per se , since he wasn't a gypsy - he was fram Argentine - but he was a brilliant swing guitarist in a style similar to Django's. They met in Paris but never recorded together. When Duke Ellington heard Alemán he asked him to join his orchestra. I'm surprised tha...

As Penguin said, Mosaic is certainly the top end. Apart from them, in my experience there are two ways to go: 1. Get reissues from the company that did the original recordings - for the Swing Era that usually means Columbia, RCA/Victor or Decca/MCA/GRP. They own the original metal parts and can do e...

That recording has some serious thump to it. You may want to go easy on the bass when dj-ing it.
