When I play guitar, especially Django-style, All of Me is almost always the first thing I play. Its got nice chords and its really familar. But, I've almost never heard a great version for dancing, and I know I've never called it at a dance. The one off the Sweet and Lowdown soundtrack might work th...

That's closer to what I was thinking. On earlier jazz stuff the ensembles is often more staccato - comparing an Henderson or Webb tune vs. the Goodman version. Same thing with the 2/4 bass lines, etc. All more Janky to me.

Congratulations you've won a tiny little battle over whether someone defined something. Can we get back to the topic. Thanks. Also, you miss read my post. I was not caterogically defining the term, just throwing in what I thought it meant. I think there is some difference in the way people are using...

This semantic bs is why people get annoyed. Get to the point without out being so damn snotty. Like I said earlier, I though the term refered to earlier jazz styles which were more staccato and often in 2-feel. Pre-'34 ensemble stuff, like Henderson or Redmond or Duke, or Hot-jazz-y stuff like pre-4...

I still can't see that at all. The G5 stuff, especially My Blue Heaven and Cross Your Heart are my definition of good 4-feel swing, because you can really hear that thumpin' bass drum on all 4 beats.

I've never heard the term Janky to refer to the Artie Shaw or BG small groups. I would think a lot of 2-beat stuff say before 1934 would be more Janky. Such as used on the yehoodi threat about "Janky charleston music."

There's a cd of live recordings of swing era standards that include a version of tuxedo junction by erskine hawkins. It's a little faster and a bit longer too. I wonder if it is the same as the version he ripped. Any chance you're talking about this one? http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&...

So I found the version after realizing that I was the one who played it - it was a request and I just went through my ipod and found the one. Anyway its on the "Complete Erskine Hawkins" and is 3:14. The Trpt solo and the trpt plunger figures behind the clar solo have some real grit and bi...

To be honest I don't know if it was a live record, but I thought it was the "original" version, and it was played for the shim-sham.

The oringal Erskine Hawkins version was surprisingly good last time I heard it, which was at HiLX 2005. I hadn't heard it in years and was really surprised by how good it was - the trumpet solo especially. Of course, nobody really plays it for shim-sham around here.

The Spirit is Willing has a good number of songs. Then again, you might just look to itunes to Cherry-pick.

I thought it was funny that when I heard "Slip Horn Jive", I thought it sounded like Shaw, and then I found out it was arranged by Jerry Gray, who arranged for Shaw. Same thing with "Glen Island Special" and the fact that it was arranged by Eddie Durham.
