Us crusty old farts are way better, we had to haul 45's on our backs through 10 feet of snow, up hill both ways. For the most part, I can't really vote for age making a difference unless we're talking someone who was intimately involved with the dance and the music back in the day and continu...

I'd definitely avoid the one song each thing, that sounds like a pain to do. It could end up sounding like someone hit random on the 200 disc changer, especially if they all have different styles. I'd suggest keeping it simple with 20 minute sets each or maybe 15 minute sets and then do something in...

I really have no clue my first guess was a wagon but listening to the music, I'd have to go with the train because the song or at least the first part of it kind of sounds like a steam locomotive which eventually blows it's whistle. I can not find a reference to a "Mason" flyer in a stream...

I have to agree. I think it's true of many of the greats. They wouldn't be recognized as greats if anyone could copy their style.

If you're looking for something with a little energy, might I suggest Cheek to Cheek off Eva Cassidy's Live at Blues Alley CD. Great version, lots of energy, dance/love theme, Lindy-able, Fox-trot/Quick-step-able, ECS-able. It's a little long, about 4 minutes after the intro but the tempo's not too ...

I love Alberta Hunter's stuff. She has another good version of Darktown Strutters' Ball on her Downhearted Blues, Live at the Cookery CD. It's a has be added energy of being a live recording.

I picked up the Proper 4-CD Lionel Hampton box set last week for $22 at the Virgin Megastore in Boston. It kind of made up for not finding anything from my want-list.

Earl Hines

Since we haven't had a new installment of the artists discussion, how about Earl Hines. I'm kind of digging his stuff from the 30's. Any recommendations/suggestions/opinions?

Our small scene has almost dissolved. Mostly for Economic and political reasons, we lost our regular venue. It was a night club that hosted our night on one of their slower evenings. When it changed ownership, at the beginning of the year, the new owners opted not to open on the slower evenings unle...

I agree one shouldn't feel guilty about charging or taking money for Djing or teaching. On the other hand, there are a lot of people out there doing one, the other or both that insist on getting paid and don't (IMO) deserve what they ask. For DJing, the local night club that used to host our weekly ...

Good question, I think I've always been able to tell the two. I don't really know how. Generally I like Goodman's sound a little better, I think it just sounds a little smoother. Not being a musician, I don't think I can quite pinpoint it. Just listening to a few right now I think maybe Shaw plays n...

I'm not an advocate of classifying songs based on BPM, I'd rather classify things more qualitatively as slow, slow-medium, medium, etc. BPM or approximate BPM might be useful for cataloging but I find it less useful for selecting a song. Take two songs of the exactly the same tempo. One may sound fa...

I would say a nightmare for anyone ... or at least a royal PITA. Our former Monday night venue started out with a really good sound system and a couple of twins that were hired as the DJs (it was a typical night club). They took very good care of the equipment and in fact they were absolutely parano...

I must apologize for those who were unable to access the board today. I run the DNS for the swingdjs.com and had some routing and related issues with my upstream network provider. Everything should be working now.

Burning slower is a first thing to try. I've had to deal with some problematic DVD players that were hit or miss if they could read CD-R media. Burn speed did not seem to make a difference. If it's just the one player having trouble, then I'd suspect it may be a little more sensitive to CD-R media. ...
