ooh... lexicon. like damon suggested, it is next to impossible to find a common understanding of "groove." just because a number of people use the term doesn't make it gospel. my assertion that "groove" is a nebulous term at best might seem alien to you if you think yourself a &q...

Perhaps, but like or not, "groove" has become the designated Lindyhopper term for the larger group of more modern, slower, jazz and blues, not just a subgenre of soul-jazz. lindy hoppers get da gas-face! tons of lindyhoppers can't even tell you who is singing. they couldn't pic tracey cha...

I like them both, but, to be honest, yes it is that hard, especially when it comes to danceability. It takes a bit broader appreciation of the wide variety of movement that the wide variety of music can inspire. danceability? chick webb and gene harris - what? ol' man chick played year after year f...

Out there? That 2/4 Swing/HotJazz music is woefully underplayed everywhere.
if you don't like charleston - you get da gas-face!

when i travel to dj, i make it a point to ask what the local scene prefers and what songs are best avoided. often, i end up playing one anyway but i do it because of mood & feel, not because of any real motive.

and rayned thanked me afterwards, so i felt vindicated.

i've known craig a long time and he's a tireless supporter of dancers, both here and abroad. he gave me the cd over dinner some time ago and i have to say that it was a refreshing change of pace but i cannot say that i consider it for dj purposes very often. usually, when it does get consideration, ...

Have you ever had the nightmare of going out dancing only to find that 80% of the music you're going to hear is played every week at this venue, and at least once a week at another? Songs like, "Artificial Flowers", "Zoot Suit Riot" (yes, it still gets played and packs the floor...

word. jumpin' at the woodside is one of my favorite pieces, but it's not the only solid fast piece out there. as i said earlier, better selections mean a broader, more appreciate (less burnt out) audience. i'm sure reuben can list 113 fast lindy songs off the top of his head, so why limit your audie...

no good song is ever overplayed. it is simply a poor selection at that time. bad songs and personal favorites are overplayed or just played out. when i panicked at the philly exchange - i think i was watching some girl's butt - and didn't have a song cued up, i played "i love being here with yo...

what? there's a fat crop of lady djs out there - tomo, sidney, sharon ashe, etc. i know that i became a dj because i had the disposable income to do it. there's not a lot of people that can justify dropping - or even interested in - $$$ for this or that piece. we do have a lot of students out there....

not a joke. I cannot stand Miles Davis, John Coltrain, Dizzy Gilespie, Slim and Slam, the standard issued stuff from those guys. I have heard one slim gaillard song that i like, and I know that coltrain played in other bands that I like, but i am just talking about what they are known for, what get...
