I've been asking the same question. I even emailed them with no results. By be I will just try againn. Brian I got the same non-respons, but there's a link on their website to a jazz station that has mp3 recordings of a show they did last New Year's. Good stuff. It includes interviews with members ...

Off the top of my head I'd go with "The Great Summit" With Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington playing together. Great stuff. The Great Summit is not only my favorite Ellington CD, it's probably my favorite CD, period. I can listen to Louis sing and play Duke's standards for hours on end. ...

Very cool. I've heard nothing but good things about Josh's playing, and I'm looking foward to hearing you guys in April.

You listed the guys I was thinking of (Rich & Brooks). Re: Steve Fentriss. He's the real deal. Granted I've mostly heard him playing old school Duke Ellington Cotton Club era's stuff, but they belted out a couple solid swing tunes too. Talk about gear. He plays on a replica of Sonny Greer's drum...

I can say the same thing about drummers as well. Except there are only 2 of them in LA, and there are only 5 total (okay maybe six). Would you mind listing who would those people be either here or in a pm? I'm just curious because I can think of a couple names, but I'm not as familiar with people t...

I think the first choice is the way to go. The lindy hop community isn't so huge that it would be hard to dig up reviews from people you trust if you haven't heard prospective dj's yourself which I think is the the most ideal situation. Any schmoe can burn a compilation cd, tell you how many events ...

I think this has already been addressed earlier in the thread. It's not really a moral question for people interested in jazz more than 40 or 50 years old. It's in our interests to buy music and encourage others to do so, because it gives record companies the incentive to release new "old"...

Straight-ahead and Swing are not the same thing. I've always wondered about the term "straight ahead" since I've heard it a lot in relation to jazz. I have a general idea of what it means after listening to lots of examples, but I was wondering if there's a specific element(s)makes music ...

Because the bands that made the craze what it was were shitty-ass musicians, comparatively speaking. Sure, there was money, but you would have had to compromise your artistic integrity to make the music that the people wanted to hear. I stumbled onto this thread on Allaboutjazz.com. I think this qu...

Very nice. If anyone is interested, check out "Stomp and Swerve" for a history of "hot" american music from the pre-civil war period to the beginning of the Jazz Era. Not long and a very easy read because it's not a pure academic book, but more of an extended essay according to t...

I was trying to find out what year the Gap ad came out (1998 according to adweek.com) and I stumbled onto the following columnpublished in 1998 in The National Review of all places. http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1282/is_n19_v50/ai_21191248 It has some interesting comments that made me t...

i'm not sure about the validity of the argument that starting slow and with vocals mean that the newbies will always dance slow. This is a topic that seems to be driven by anecdotal evidence and personal preference. but since we are using anecdotal evidence, one counter example would be the case of...

Cool modern band combo's

Some of you may have had the opportunity to hear The Boilermaker Jazz Band play with George Gee's Jump, Jive & Wailers in NYC, DC, or North Carolina. I can't speak for NYC or NC, but it was a great night of music in DC. It got me to thinking: what other combination of bands or personel currently...

I heard the Smithsonioan Jazz Masterworks Orchestra perform during the WWII Memorial festivities last year. Kinda disappointing actually. Incredible musicians. Some of them even play in various swing bands around DC. However, as an ensemble, they didn't seem very comfortable with the Swing Era mater...
