I agree about thinking in terms of transitions and short mini-sets. Invest some time into finding things that work for you in advance and then when the mood is right try them out. I've also handed the headphones over to select friends sometimes to ask, "what do you think of this?" and been...

Yeah, you're right. I think that's part of what was so humorous to me... they were extremely tight with details (including how long the gig is) but I think its because they're very unsure of what they're doing. I made some basic assumptions that the event would be similar to the informal Thursday ni...

Competitive bid to hire a DJ?

Just thought I'd share this (and put it here since economics factors into DJ'ing somewhere)... I was recently approached by a municipal Parks and Recreations director about DJ'ing a city sponsored swing dance. She said I'd been strongly recommended but that references didn't count, they're hiring th...

Well, if you're looking for Django, John Jorgenson was chosen to portray Django Reinhardt in the film "Head in the Clouds" and his version of Minor Swing and Blue Drag are quite good. Check out his release entitled Franco-American Swing if you're curious. But is the manouche jazz sub-genre...

Don't get me wrong; good small musicians are rare gems to be nurtured. Heck, we're even planning a trip down to New Orleans to catch Linnzi Zaorksi this spring. My dilemma is I'm now in a small city with an extremely limited pool of swing musicians; with rare exception most here play exclusively fro...

I gotta admit, George Gee made me feel like a celebrity when he sent me a copy of one of his CD's to play for dancers. I still remember my wife's stunned look as she said, "why would he send YOU a free CD? He doesn't even know you!" It was as if it were a priceless golden gift from the hea...

I just stumbled across a good French compilation Jimmie Lunceford: Une Anthologie 1934-1942 on the Cabu label (?) Issued April 24, 2007 Listening to the songs back to back against the Swingsation recording I found the French recordings to be much crisper and clearer on almost every track; especially...

Arg! I spent 45 minutes listing bands and then the forum ate my list... but there are some great musicians (and wonderful people) who are very appreciative of DJ's playing their music amongst my My Space (froggy_and_miss_mousie) friends. Alternately, they're all on my regularly posted play lists on ...

I dropped about $30 for Blaze Media Pro's MP3 editor and its worked out very well for me. Definitely a lot more to it than I need. The only real problem I have is the application automatically turns the output volume up to maximum levels when the application launches. Just about deafened me and gave...

When I first started out, some of the local DJ's got on me about wanting to "swap hard drives". It seemed like pointless one ups-manship where one guy was even ripping Broadway musicals just to get a larger collection of tracks! Sadly, he accidentally even played one for us one night. Yees...

Remember those stories we heard as kids about the family who announces their daughter's wedding in the newspaper and while they're all out at the rehearsal dinner some professional thief, who's realized everyone would be out for the night, robs them blind. Same concept... I've now had enough strange...

Can anyone point me towards either a quick "How To", software recommendations or more succinctly the url of where that might have been previously discussed over on the tech side?

Thanks.

Russell,

I noticed that Jonny is playing on the recording you posted and the glissando is much less shrill plus the piano action of the keyboard isn't as loud and clicky. A much preferable recording!

Thanks.

"Gliss Me Again" by Johnny Guarnieri

As much as I love this song its a real crap shoot for me whether the treble glissandoes are going to overload the tweeters at the different venues I play at. I believe I got my version off emusic, but could there be a prefered recording I'm not aware of? I'm going to try to work some magic with the ...
