Other than Straight No Chaser, I've had a hard time finding danceable Monk. It's probably just me. But suggestions are always welcome.

I'll just pass on the advice that was passed to me, "Don't be afraid to clear the floor."

Laugh, someday we'll get paid. Someday... (though the equipment probably won't be nearly as nice)

When I get free beer, Dana, then you get free beer. Hey, maybe we'll get free beer for being cancelled last time!

I know...I'll buy you a beer if you buy me a beer.

I suspect the problem of not having enough DJs is rare. I have not been in a scene that suffers from a lack of DJs. Chicago always had a solid core of DJs when I was there. Same with San Fran when I visisted for an extended stay. Austin probably has too many DJs for its own good, which leads some o...

Re: Pushing people in

In general, most DJs are bred in some form or fashion. They are not born with record collections, dance skills, etc... Whether or not a particular DJ will admit to being influenced is another story. Sorry, I should have been more clear. It's obvious that no one is born with record collections, but ...

Pushing people in

I didn't want to detract from main_stem's topic--which is an important one, but it inspired me to start this one, which is about encouraging people to start DJ'ing. Many of you are probably in scenes where the DJ's are plentiful, but where does the new talent come from? And is it actually possible t...

Err....you mean people in general don't behave like me? That's ludicrous!

I think there's an old saying about being careful about what you hate because you become it. i think the more anal we get about what is or is not lindy/swing/authentic etc, the closer we approach international dancesport. rigorously excluding what is not swing music is just as anal as rigorously de...

I voted often, also with the distinction between dislike and loathing. I'll try just about anything at least once. If I'm in a different scene, probably more than once. We don't have a lot of luxury of choice out here in Calgary. Lots of live bands, but not always good ones. I've only left a bar bec...

If we all did that, would we not all start to sound the same, as DJs? Wouldnt there be less uniqueness between each of us? Some could argue that this has already happened. There's enough music out there and enough variety in taste, that I think even if all DJ's were to incorporate a wider variety, ...

Duke's Nutcracker Suite is about as Christmas-y as...well the original Nutcracker Suite.

If you do not master your rage, your rage will become your master. I actually agree with Nate Dog though--as obvious as he is. Wasn't this thread originally about how various DJ's handle requests of songs they don't want to play (in particular, "standards")? "Why am I doing this again...

I managed to buy a VHS copy of the documentary "The International Sweethearts of Rhythm" as well as "Tiny and Ruby: Hell Divin' Women". Both are excellent if you get a chance to see them. I don't have a turntable yet, so buying the ISR album seems a bit silly (still trying to sav...
