LaVerne Butler Playing for Dancers!

Thought some of you might be interested in this... It started with Junior Mance’s first gig for lindy hoppers. Then came John Bunch’s and Ray Bryant’s premier lindy hop event. And then, of course, The Basie Centennial Ball. Now the gang at Jelly Roll Productions and Yehoodi.com are teaming up again ...

The Hora!

Ok, so a swing dancer friend is having a wedding this Sunday and I'm DJing it. They requested that I make sure to have The Hora. And, well, a nice Jewish boy like myself, well, doesn't have it. Does anyone have a copy of it that they can email to me?! It would be much appreciated. my email address i...

Also, if it was a live band (which is the optimal situation) you won't here them play an uptempo swing tune, followed by a groovy 60s piece, followed by a funk, followed by a soul. Actually, that just happened Sat night with Paul Tillotson Love Trio at the CT Exchange! Furthermore, Fri night, Cathe...

caab's post intrigued me, so I brought this thread up with Junior Mance, wonering if that was the same philosophy "back in the day". This was his response: "David, It is extremely rare that "cutting sessions" ever had any malicious intent or feelings in mind. Even "back...

I've always gotten a kick out of Cherokee, which is indeed sectioned in four phrases, but instead of each phrase being 4 8-counts (32 counts), it's 8 8-counts (64 counts)

I'm sure a little bit of research might dig up bootlegs of cutting sessions, but to be honest, you will never hear legendary sessions such as Ben Webster and Lester Young driving Coleman Hawkins out of Kansas City. I heard Herschel Evans was also a part of that session. And they had to go wake up M...

Mahalia Jackson

So for the past two weeks at our weekly dance (Frim Fram) I've played Mahalia's "Keep You Hand on the Plow" from Duke Ellington in Newport, 1958. Well I've gotten more people come up to the DJ booth and ask me about that song both times, than I have any other song in a real long time. So, ...

I don't think this counts, but what about Happy Go Lucky Local / Night Train? Not quite the same, but Wardell Gray's solo on "Twisted" was turned into vocalese by Annie Ross of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross. Yeah, that stuff is cool...listening to the actual solo that was used when the vocal...

Are those 300 unduplicated recordings? Even with that it's still less than what it would take to collect Ellington. For example, the Basie Complete RCA-Victor is just 3 discs, whereas the Ellington Complete RCA-Victor is 24 discs. Amen to that. If you want to talk about output, Ellington is your ma...
