One thing I do want to say about live music. As much as Shorty Dave and I differ as far as what kind of music we like, iI must say I really respect his hard work and diligence in bringing live music to dancers in the New York are. And, of course, his conspirators Christine, Nicole, Wexie, and the k...

Boilermaker Jazz Band CD Release Party

Anyone in the Pittsburgh area should be aware that the Boilermaker Jazz Band has just finished production on their new CD, "Give Me Your Phone Number," which according to Paul Cosentino was recorded with dancers in mind. I'm psyched ;). The CD release party will be held Friday, April 16th ...

For the last two semesters, I did a swing-jazz-funk-hiphop show on WRCT ( http://www.wrct.org ), Carnegie Mellon's college radio station. Radio DJing teaches you to think about your sets well in advance, but still be able to change them up to respond to requests. It also forces you to be organized a...

I've thought about this in the past, because you can fit so many more mp3s on a CD than actual music tracks. But I would never want to DJ with such a setup, because having too many of your tracks on one CD is a bad idea: if two of the tracks you want to play in sequence are on one CD, you have no ab...

I don't tend to go to used CD's stores very often in most cases I get much better cd's knowing what I want then having to get what someone else does not want. Too bad. If DJing meant that you have the same taste in music as the general population, you wouldn't be a very good DJ. So by definition a ...

the vocalist on "Down Home Blues" is Nikki Harris, not Ernestine Anderson. The album being referred to is Ernestine Anderson's When The Sun Goes Down , with Gene Harris and Ray Brown. The Nikki Harris version is on Down Home Blues , with Gene Harris and Jack McDuff. Also: S&J Blues, t...

Since I spend at least a few hours a week in the CD and record stores around here, I make a habit of buying good CDs that I already own when I find them cheap, and then I sell them at cost to interested dancers. I haven't spawned any new DJs that way, but at least it's helped a few people learn more...

Probably true; I tend to be wary of the brighness/noise tradeoff, as I have a lot of occasion to DJ on crappy sound systems which make the crackling unbearable.

That goes against the definition of clone, as a clone is a copy of one source.

Pick five DJs you think are awesome. Try to be a clone of all five, simultaneously. Try for a few years. Fail. Realize you've become unique. Hope that people like it.

The more I learn about DJing, the more I realize that being unique is really easy. On the other hand, being unique and good is really hard. So for now, I'm working on good and not worrying so much about being unique.
