RE Waller: agree. I've been listening to some of his live recordings lately. Top shelf.

I haven't ordered any of the recent sets (but, boy, do I want to!), but I can brag about this: I found the Complete Sidney Bechet Blue Note and the Complete Armstrong Decca All-Stars Studio sets at Amoeba in SF yesterday. No box or book, but only $40 for the Bechet and only $36 for the Armstrong. H...

Oh, man. Want. Seriously want. But I think I need to get the Goodman too, as I still don't have enough of his well-mastered big band stuff!

I'm also a bit wary of dismissing genres or artists because of things like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiiUUWBmPHM

And since the topic is, after all, overplayed songs , the ones I really think could use some time off are Viper Mad and Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho . Great songs, but please. That naughty sweety thing was beaten to death some years ago, though; everybody seems to be sick of it now. The only ve...

I was gonna say 'I think of this when I think of dixie:' and 'I think of this when I think of 'Nolastyle': ' and then I realised they're pretty much the same, except the Firehouse Five play it for laughs and Tuba Skinny are DEADLY SRS in that video. If I had to choose between those and this , I'd ch...

For the last couple of years: Sidney Bechet. I love him, and I've sure contributed to the overplaying myself, but still. As far as I'm concerned, this whole Dixieland revival thing in the swingdance community has gone too far. Remember, Bechet was booed off stage at the Savoy Ballroom. To the swing...

Gordon Webster. Love the dood, but I need a break. I've recently given myself a rule: 90% recordings <1950 because I'm overplaying modern bands. Dude, share! I'm playing 90% ante-1950 because I don't have modern bands' stuff! (O.K., I have a little. But, for example, I have no Gordon Webster.) What...

Gordon Webster. Love the dood, but I need a break. I've recently given myself a rule: 90% recordings <1950 because I'm overplaying modern bands. Otherwise, I don't think there're terribly many patterns in the DJing here, because we've got a really random collection of DJs doing dancer-run gigs, and ...

You need to listen to Hey Mr Jesse's podcast; check out which bands are playing the big lindy hop events; and pay attention to the soundtracks of telly shows like Treme. Write down the names of individual musicians, then see what bands they play with. Buy the music you like.

My worst DJing experiences involve being sent albums that are terrible and then being asked for a review. Oh, I've had this experience a couple of times. I want to be honest and helpful (ie actually do reviews where I look at something which isn't so great and explain why), but I figure the lindy h...

I've just realised I don't have a whole lot of Goodman orchestra stuff.
Is the Mosaic Goodman orch set a good purchase, in terms of DJable stuff for lindy hoppers?

A guy trying to pick me up even though I clearly stated I was the DJ and MARRIED, not a part of the singles group that had joined our dance for the night. He wouldn't leave the booth even though I pointedly told him to go. and then ignored him. What happened next? He slapped me on the rump. Otherwi...
