Re: New Album from Glenn Crytzer's Savoy Seven
I'm quite conflicted about it. The music is great, the effort and passion put in is outstanding - but, the sound is quite poor. I get what they were trying to do, but I think it falls short. I DJed a new Crytzer track back to back with some 40s Lionel Hampton and the Hampton had better fidelity! Sur...

Re: New Album from Glenn Crytzer's Savoy Seven
This album is available as of next week, and it's good – Very good! The band has an authentic 30s small group sound, and their originals have all the right characteristics of great tracks for swing dancing. I initially complained that they had deliberately 'faked" an old "low-fi" soun...

I'm ashamed to say I don't know enough names to add to the list, but I'd request:

Re: Where are the swing DJ discussions these days?
Since we're already the latter, maybe it's just an awareness thing? letting people know this forum/resource even exists? so I guess that goes back to "spamming" facebook or whatever. I think that's part of it. Perhaps new Swing DJ enthusiasts arrive here and see only a few posts about Har...

Re: Traditional Jazz or Dixieland?
My 5 minute, probably wrong, list of swing music genres, with examples... Ragtime (Scott Joplin) New Orleans (Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton) Chicago style (Bix Beiderbecke, Eddie Condon) Dance Bands (Paul Whiteman) Big Band Swing (Fletcher Henderson, Benny Goodman, Count Basie etc) Small Group ...

Re: Traditional Jazz or Dixieland?
There is not too much difference. Dixieland generally refers to the early jazz style of the southern US States (New Orleans etc). I think of "Traditional Jazz" as the revivalist style that became popular in Britain in the 50s. "Dixieland" style but maybe more use of saxophone. I ...

Dicky Wells recommendations?
Anyone got some recommendations on Dicky Wells? He played in some killer bands but I don't have much of his stuff as a leader and I'm thinking it could be good...

Basie recorded with Jimmy Rushing on and off until the late sixties. Mostly as a 'special reunion' type thing.

Re: MacBook Air 13'' for DJing?
The Macbook Air 13.3'' should be more than fine. Having an SSD is a big plus. Storage might be the main consideration. 256GB should be plenty for DJing, but if you have a large collection and, like me, tend to be a completist that doesn't like to delete even the bad tracks, an external drive or larg...

Re: Most Offensive (?) Song You've Played (or Want to Play)
"Strange Fruit" should never be for social dancing in any context, in my opinion. As a thoughtful and respectful performance piece, then maybe, but context matters.
Agreed Jessie. Fun and raunchy is the right approach.

Re: Most Offensive (?) Song You've Played (or Want to Play)
I find "We're Gonna Have To Slap The Dirty Little Jap" by Lucky Millinder quite catchy.
