Re: Mora's Modern Rhythmists versus Barbara Morrison

The bitching and moaning I think he's referring to is the constant broken-record "you aren't dancing Lindy Hop", and "why don't you play some Lindy Hop music?" postings all over the net. the reason I play Mora more, is because I tend to DJ lindy Hop events.... :D This latest roun...

Feedback? I was just making fun of you...! Oh, not really. But feel free to make fun of my site anytime in return. But I like to play the game of "what category does this song belong to", too, despite the fact that it basically makes no difference to what category we put things in. But I w...

Hmmm, the version of Jack the Bear I sampled off Amazon.com from that album didn't sound too bad, but I have a hi-fi version I like better. Its a version of Jack the Bear that I got off Tony Q who found it on some "(something) Party" album. Jesse has it.

And by the way, the fact that people were dancing the same to two completely different types of music should tell you something. Yes, it does tell me something. It tells me that fundamentally, the dance that people were doing to both songs is still Lindy Hop. I may have finally learned to spell wha...

Incidentally, at least Lawrence didn't label Slim Gaillard as "jump blues" like another DJ on this list!

OK OK, I admit I'm an instigator!

Good stuff, Lawrence. Incidentally, last night, when this Lindyhop DJ played Lindyhop music for Lindyhop dancers last night at our local Lindyhop venue in San Diego called The Firehouse, I played two Barbara Morrison songs and one Mora's song. The people Lindyhopping looked, to my poor uneducated, n...

When are you guys going to stop with the "its not Lindy hop" stuff? I can do 3 swingouts and a circle to Barbara Morrison just fine, thank you. How come you persist with such silly statements? Do you really think by telling people they aren't doing Lindy hop that somehow you are going to c...

Austin site

I hadn't checked out Lawrence's Austin site until recently. Its pretty good: http://www.austinlindy.com/top_20_essential_cds.htm and other stuff he writes about music, including his album of the week. There aren't many good review sites on the web, I always appreciate finding one. I can't believe I ...

I'm surprised more people didn't applaud the Dave Davies/Hotfood Club version of Till Tom.

Is it because you genuinely think the musicality isn't as good?

No, he's referring to jump blues, I believe, because Candye Kane does mostly jump blues. Patrik, we call "blues" dancing dancing to slow swinging blues and other slow (70 to 120 BPM) tunes. The blues I think you are talking about are just normal Lindy-danceable jump blues songs. I play suc...

That's really a key question. How much variety is too much variety? Most people like dancing to songs they know and like. But advanced dancers also want songs they haven't heard before to keep them interested and to challenge them. And if you have been doing this a while you've heard most of the sta...

Till Tom Special

I've always liked the song "Till Tom Special" written by Goodman/Hampton. I first heard it played by this small group who played on Monday nights at this tiny bar in Chicago 6 yrs ago. Back then I was annoyed because I thought it was too fast and it had such an annoyingly abrupt ending. Bu...
