I gotta disagree here, I got the 40-disc set (which can be found on Ebay for ~$60, btw) and was disappointed with the sound quality. Granted, there is no crackling usually associated with lo-fi recordings, but that is because they have applied (in my opinion) excessive noise reduction, which cuts ou...

You guys gotta check out The Clark Terry Five's version. Slow, and totally rad. I play it often, not sure if it's the best but it's my current favorite.

I used to play a version off of Happy Birthday, Duke! the Birthday Sessions, which I really liked, although if I remember correctly Ray Nance is slightly off-mic for that number. Still great for dancing though.

I don't own the book, but now that I am reading about it, it appears that there is a better resource that covers the same subject, and more importantly is in print. It's called AMERICAN RECORD LABELS AND COMPANIES: An Encyclopedia (1891-1943) . Comes with a CD-ROM and is affordably priced! From swaz...

Record Label Guide [from SONH DJ Summit]
The book I mentioned at SONH is called The American Record Label Book (The Roots of Jazz) by Brian Rust. Looking on it now, it covers everything up to the mid-forties. It is indeed out of print, but can be found occasionally on ebay. This guy is also responsible for the 2000-plus page American Dance...

My favorite Cherokee is a relatively slow version (I'd guess 175 or so) on Big Bands in Hi-Fi, Vol. 1: Let's Dance. It's labeled Cherokee/Redskin Rhumba, but they're basically the same song. This track is great for dancing but it kinda long, 6 1/2 minutes or so if I remember.[/url]

I think there is a reason they are the most popular: they play what more dancers want to hear. While you could argue that dancers are going to like more whatever they are most exposed to, I believe there is an element of the aforementioned DJ's having their finger on the pulse of the Lindy Hop commu...

Re: Night Train LPs
Did you know there's a Night Train Vol. 2 floating around on vinyl? Mike picked it up a while ago. I think it's a compilation of tracks from other studio sessions. I'll tell him to post about it when he returns from SONH. Unfortunately, the Night Train vol. 2 LP was just a reissue of earlier Peters...

I use 100% polypropylene sleeves from Univenture. I'm wondering if the sharpie marker weakened the disc, or if it was just a crappy brand. I'll post when I get home and check it out.
