This thread prompted me to try EQing an old track, which was something I'd been thinking about doing. I used Fletcher Henderson's "Radio Rhythm" from the CD, Tidal Wave , because that's about all I had on the computer. I opened the .wav in Cubase, and EQed with three bands, then added a li...

"Ridin' and Jivin'" by Earl Hines. I think there was another question about it, somewhere.

Dancing before your set

I find that it helps me immensely if I dance - even a single song - before my set (coming on after somebody else). I feel as though I fit in with the dancers, and I'm able to feel their energy much more easily. This may be old hat to some of the veterans here, but I still think it's cool. Anybody el...

...As a DJ, isn't our responsibility to the dancers... ...My job is to watch the room and please the dancers... This is pretty much my approach, at least to the extent I'm running the event. I consider it a specific kind of party, rather than just a time for swing dancing. I work very hard to play ...

I edit things, from time to time. Would one of the moderators mind moving the editing-discussion to a new thread?

It annoys me when a DJ plays a groove track that has a two-minute, bop-ish bass-solo in the middle, losing the feeling of the beat.

Also, I agree that the rambling-on-the-mic business is evil.

It could also be a mix of things. Could you describe the sound a bit more? It might help to set up early once and test things out. I'm certainly no expert in sound equipment, but here's some stuff I'd try: Play an original CD Check all connections Use well-shielded cables Play a CD that's been burne...

When Kevin and Carla were here last, they used an iPod during the workshops. I don't believe it was a nano. Occasionally, there would be some slight (but noticeable) interference from a cell phone or a plane or something. Has anybody had that problem with the nano? Could the problem be due to an uns...

What moves people, these days?

We play for a pretty specialized crowd that's accustomed to (and expects) a specific genre of music. Our dancers want jazz that swings hard, so they can dance well-defined dances. This is all well and good. The fact is, this music, while timeless, doesn't come from our time; today's world and music ...

Thanks, those are nice suggestions. I'll have to check them out. As for telling them it's a swing night and not a salsa night - I'm expected to honor requests (there's an announcement about it), so I'm not in a very good position to refuse to play salsa, even though I'd like to. Also, this area has ...

Salsa

I keep getting requests for salsa, which is pretty popular here. I'm not really into salsa, but I'd like to get something people will appreciate, not just the "In the Mood" of that genre. Are there any salsa songs or CDs that are especially popular among dancers in your scene?

I have the Benny Goodman and one of the Django Reinhardt ones. I'm happy with the sound quality. I love both sets.
