OK so I saw this thread and then I went to Sweet and Hot and BEHOLD there was a Casa Loma CD on Hindsight. So I got it. Sound quality is pretty good (can't hear the drums, as usual for recordings from this period that have been cleaned up), music is alternately sweet and hot -- how apropos. Glen Gra...

Pedersen is a monster, and so is his guitarist Ulf Wakenius. Wakenius plays guitar like Oscar plays piano ... it's an amazing match.

Basically the whole Quartet is amazing.

In LA, Flying Home gets a big old pile of lindy hop on the floor. no big apple in sight. in fact i don't think i've ever seen a spontaneous big apple.

Become a Friendlier Person 1. Don't criticize, condemn or complain. I only tell Mike he was a dork if he deserves it. 2. Give honest, sincere appreciation. I honestly think he's a dork. 3. Arouse in the person an eager want. I have some music he doesn't. 4. Become genuinely interested in other peop...

Yes, I agree that too often people take it too personally when something they like is attacked. But all it means is that they don't just like it, they LOVE it. I appreciate passion about music. At any rate, I still think that there are shades of gray all over the issue. You don't have to play ALL fa...

There are two major late-night/after hours camps out there: those who want fast music so they stay awake, and those who want softer, subtler music so they can relax and chill a bit after dancing hard during the day and evening dances. I think this is a good example of an artificial dichotomy create...

For dancing to or to listen to?

Pretty much any bop version of Cherokee is going to be blazing. There is a 410 bpm version on Karrin Allyson's "Collage" CD. Swing versions, I dunno.

A more interesting battle would be to play the OTHER DJ's preference: I play my "classic" music from before 1945, and he plays his "groove" music from after 1960. . I suggested this to Greg for ALHC this year, back when there was a groove vs. classic debate (read: tard-war) shor...

PE6-5000 seems correct.

It is the number of the hotel Pennsylvania. Apparently you can still dial it.

Leonard Reed, who created the tap shim sham that became the lindy hop shim sham (there are many shim shams), originally danced it to Turkey in the Straw.

The whole routine should be over in about a minute at that speed! And my motto is: you can never end a line dance fast enough. heh heh heh.

Well, I feel like I've said this a million times, but to me lindy hop projects outwards, while "interpersonal connected dancing" does not. See, I'm trying not to use That Certain Word here, ok? Work with me, man.

I like Jive at Five, In a Mellow Tone, Things Ain't What They Used To Be, and "slow burn" songs to dance to as far as keeping the room alive. By slow burn I don't mean intense blues numbers, but more like songs that feel or start slow but rather pick up the intensity as it goes along. Unfo...

"dancers" is a nebulous term. I doubt all or even a significant fraction of the dancers in the swing era could identify soloists, but I am guessing that if you dance to the same band week after week for years you are going to be able to identify them. So in general I'd say Whitey's members...
