I always think that The Opener offa Great London Concerts will work great, and I've tried it twice in the past 3 or 4 years in seattle, and I got blank stares both times..

Strange but true, Hot Club of Cowtown are more appreciated by dancers in other cities than they are here in Austin. I was really bumbed they weren't playing at the Contintinental the thursday of the exchange weekend.. I've seen 'em in eugene 3 or 4 times now - I wouldn't necessarily book them for a...

Has anyone listened to pretty much the whole thing? I picked up 7 of the 2 disc sets (and paid $56 plus tax, whereas on ebay you could get it all for 70).. I filled out earlier stuff, '24-'37 + '39.. Even the 14 cds I picked up are a mountain of music.. I've used a couple of tracks for dancing so f...

Duke Ellington 40 Disc Box Set
Kevin Tamura and I found (and bought) a bunch of individual discs from that at Cheapos in austin, the sound quality is incredible - even for the stuff from the 20's.

I thought it was much more diverse than 2 years ago, when the grand total of swing era songs was something like 7. The odd thing, as I see it, with that reputation is that it was really clear to me when I was DJing (even on thursday night when it was mostly locals) that nobody in austin has any trou...

Experiment - play it, and see if it really loses people.. maybe stick one better sounding swing era recording ahead of it to lighten the shock.. and if it does lose people, then follow it with something that panders a little and you'll get a super full floor out of the pent up irritation from the la...

I've done music for a couple of contests, and by the last one I finally realized that the songs probably should be on the familiar side.. you want people to dance their best to it, so it helps to play something you know lotsa people like.. my beef with contests is the length - I hate fading a swing ...

Here it is on AMG I actually heard about it from Sylvia Sykes.. she told me about having it in the 60's and wearing it out.. it took a few months, but I eventually found a copy. (two actually, and one got lost in the mail) There's actually a sealed copy online right now for $40, which is only a lit...

I'll give my vote to the Ray Brown too. Although there are a bunch of good versions. A couple of others that haven't been mentioned is Jimmy Forrest's from "Night Train" (slow and early r&b jazz) and jonah jones from "I Dig Jonah" (faster with a shuffle). Hehehe, I think I h...

(We have close to 400 registrants and 300 paid and confirmed, so there will be significant spill-over into these rooms) Are you expecting people to end up in those rooms because they prefer the music, or just because there's no room in the main ballroom? I suppose you've already considered it, but ...

They don't have to have a cd out yet, as long as I can get a good recording.
Still in the end we will have to choose from what we can get and make the collection as good as possible.
